Naval Academy official suggests renaming 'Indian runs' to avoid offense

5/19/2012: An official at the U.S. Naval Academy strongly is urging officers to no longer refer to the exercise "Indian runs" as such in order not to offend Native Americans, according to a series of E-mails sent from the academy's equal opportunity advisor. The term "Indian run" is used to describe the alternating sprint exercises at various levels. Full story

Public tour French Navy schooners docked in Annapolis

5/18/2012: They departed the northwest coast of France two months ago - 26 crew members each aboard two historic French schooners headed to North America. With relatively calm seas, a chef well-versed in French cuisine and plenty of technological updates to the World War II-era ships, the boats made an easy voyage to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. The schooners made the journey as part of the bicentennial of the War of 1812. The schooners will remain moored at the Naval Academy through Tuesday. Once they depart, they will travel to Canada with six Naval Academy midshipmen onboard, as part of a summer training program. Full story 

Naval Academy Sea Trials tests plebes' teamwork

5/16/2012: The Naval Academy freshmen class endured 14 continuous hours of rigorous physical and mental challenges during the Academy's annual Sea Trials training Tuesday as part of the culmination of their freshmen year. Sea Trials is modeled after the Marine Corps' Crucible and the Navy's Battle Stations recruit programs. It is a "capstone" event for the fourth class midshipmen and serves as a leadership challenge for the upper class who lead each event during the exercise. Full story - Facebook photos

5/15/2012: Defense Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta will speak at the graduation exercise for the Naval Academy's Class of 2012 at 10 a.m. on May 29 at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. Full story

2012 NAPS class meet the challenge

5/14/2012: Approximately 220 midshipman candidates from the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) walked across the stage to receive their certificates of graduation on Friday, May 11. NAPS provides one year of academic, athletic and character development which began last July 26. Full story

French vessels docked at U.S. Naval Academy
French Navy schooners will welcome public visits

5/13/2012: Two French Navy schooners will dock at the U.S. Naval Academy May 11-16 as part of the 200th anniversary celebration for the war of 1812. The schooners will be open to the public Sunday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 15 from 9 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 5 pm and will be moored at Farragut sea wall. Full story
