  Naval Academy unveils $52 million field house

Semper Fi Society helps Mids prepare for Leatherneck

5/10/08: The Semper Fi Society hosted a Field Exercise (FEX) for more than 120 Midshipmen last month, designed to help prepare Midshipmen who are interested in attending Leatherneck, a four-week officer candidate course at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. Nearly half of the Midshipmen who participated in the FEX will attend Leatherneck this summer. Full story

 
 
 
  Deceased Mid remembered for big smile, love of math

5/9/08: A Naval Academy freshman who was known for inspiring others died on Monday, but she will be an inspiration for her classmates as they complete the final days of their Plebe year. Plans are in the works to use Midshipman 4th Class Kristen Dickman's Plebe hat for next week's Herndon Monument Climb, her mother said. Full story

5/8/08: One of the Naval Academy's most popular spring traditions has survived attempts to scale it down. After saying that the annual Herndon Climb might involve few Plebes this year, the academy officials have determined that all members of the class will participate. Full story

 
 
 
 

Volunteers sizzle up steaks for Midshipmen

5/7/08: As the rain came down, the tents went up. On April 2, more than 20 members of Cooks from the Valley, a volunteer group from Bakersfield, California, prepared 5,500 steaks for the Brigade of Midshipmen. Full story 

 
 
 
 

Mullen urges Academy Cadets to become leaders

5/6/08: The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told graduating cadets at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, that they will join an Army under severe stress, but one that is performing magnificently. Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, himself a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, spoke to the cadets May 2. He told them that they are well-prepared to join the force, and that they must become leaders once they are part of it. Full story

 
 
 
  Naval Academy to dedicate field house

5/5/08: The Naval Academy will dedicate the Wesley Brown Field House at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The facility, which has been under construction since march 2006, will be a new center for physical education, varsity and intramural athletics, club sports and personal fitness.

The field house is named for retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Wesley Brown, who in 1949 became the first black graduate of the Naval Academy. Full story

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to speak at academy graduation

5/3/08: Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will address the Naval Academy's graduation on May 23. Mullen has served as Joint Chiefs chairman since Oct. 1. A 1968 academy graduate, he most recently served as the 28th Chief of Naval Operations. Full Story

 
 
 
  Naval Academy commandant promoted

5/2/08:
Capt. Margaret D. Klein, who in 2006 became the first female commandant of midshipmen at the US Naval Academy, has been promoted to the rank of rear admiral. She has been assigned as operations officer on the Naval network warfare command. Full story
 
 
 
 

Mids eager to tackle all-too-brief down time

5/108: Some Naval Academy midshipmen talked about their pending graduation and commissioning on May 23, and spoke of what they want out of life. All the mids agreed they’re glad to be serving not instead of in the 1970s, when some of their parents were in uniform. Full story
