Deadline set for summer issue of
Yardtales
5/1/2013:
The deadline for the summer issue of Yardtales is
Monday, May 13. This issue will
feature the incoming Class of 2017 and family salutes for the
Class of 2013. Submit articles and photos (in JPEG or TIFF
formats) to
Jan
Haupt. Hard copies of photos can be also mailed, scanned and
promptly returned.

Midshipmen cheer on wounded
warrior bike riders
5/2/2013:
The Naval Academy gave a special tribute April
19 to those cycling through Annapolis as part of the Wounded
Warrior Project's Soldier Ride. As the riders traveled through
the Naval Academy early in the morning, midshipmen lined the
streets, cheering them on.

Midshipman one of 62 Truman
Scholars selected for 2013
5/3/2013:
U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman 2nd Class Clifton E. Luber, III,
was recently selected as a 2013 Truman Scholar. The Truman
Foundation announced that 62 students from 54 U.S. colleges and
universities were selected. Luber is the academy's 21st Truman
Scholar. The Truman Foundation is dedicated to former President
Harry S. Truman and recognizes college juniors with exceptional
leadership potential and intellectual ability who are committed
to careers in public service.

Military grooms new officers for
war in cyberspace
5/4/2013:
The U.S. service academies are ramping up efforts to groom
a new breed of cyberspace warriors to confront increasing
threats to the nation's military and civilian computer networks
that control everything from electrical power grids to the
banking system. Students at the Army, Navy and Air Force
academies are taking more courses and participating in elaborate
cyberwarfare exercises as the military educates a generation of
future commanders in the theory and practice of computer
warfare.

Navy IC sailing advances to
national championship final
5/5/2013:
The college sailing postseason began this past week in Hampton,
Virginia, where 35 of the best teams from all over the country
squared off at the College Sailing Coed National Semifinals. The
Navy intercollegiate sailing team qualified for all three of the
spring national championships to be contested in a few weeks in
St. Petersburg, Florida.

Commandant reflects on USNA tour
5/6/2013:
At the Naval Academy, the end of the academic year is a time of
celebration. Plebes will be plebes no more. Firsties look
forward to graduation and the culmination of four intense years
of training as everyone looks forward to summer. For Commandant
of Midshipmen Capt. Robert E. Clark II, Class of 1984, it's a
bittersweet moment this year as he finishes his tenure as the
Academy's 84th and longest serving commandant.

7th company wins YP color
competition
5/7/2013:
The competition challenged the midshipmen to demonstrate their
shiphandling knowledge, both in theory and on board the YP
craft. The competition is part of the annual Color Company
Competition that recognizes the company that most excels in
academics, athletics and professional accomplishments. This year
7th Company won the competition.

changes hands
5/8/2013:
The Naval Academy held the Spring 2013 Yard Patrol Craft
Squadron change of command ceremony April 30 in Mahan Hall to
recognize the relief squadron commodore and four YP commanding
officers.

5/9/2013:
Riacca Slater, a midshipman as the U.S. Naval Academy, was
selected for Team USA's Women's Rugby team at the World
University Games in Kazan, Russia, in July.

teaches computer science at USNA
5/10/2013:
Hollywood may be a long way from Annapolis, but through
the experience of Cmdr. Kevin Blenkhor, one of the creators of
Yoda in the most recent Star Wars films, midshipmen can get a
taste of what happens behind the bright lights.
