Sailors, Marines participate in
Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl
1/1/2013:
More than 50,000 college football fans watched members of the
U.S. Navy and marine perform during the pre-game spectacular at
the 2002 Bridgepoint Educaiton Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium
in San Diego on Dec. 27. The pregame performance featured
members of the "Leap Frogs" U.S. Navy parachute demonstration
team, a flag presentation and color guard from Marines assigned
to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Honor Guard and more.

Panetta orders action after sex
assault report released
1/2/2013:
U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has asked military
service academies for a "strong and immediate response" after a
report released Friday showed the three military academies had a 23-percent
spike in reported sexual assaults this year. Formal reports of
sexual assault at the Naval Academy were down in the 2011-2012
year from 22 to 13 reports. It was the only school of the three
to see a decrease.

Cliff avoided, but sequestration
still looms
1/3/2013:
The nation stepped back Tuesday from the so-called fiscal cliff
that had threatened big cuts in defense spending. But the deal
could potentially make the automatic budget cuts known as
sequestration even harsher on military programs if a deficit and
debt agreement cannot be reached between Congress and the White
House by a new deadline.

Sailors cautioned after
legalization of marijuana
1/4/2013: Although the state of
Washington has recently updated the law on the use of marijuana,
essentially decriminalizing use for civilians, Zero Tolerance
drug policy regulations remain unaffected for Sailors. The Zero
Tolerance drug policy was implemented after a fatal crash of an
EA-6B Prowler on board USS Nimitz in 1981, killing 14 crew
members and injuring 45 others. Autopsies were performed and
several members of the flight crew tested positive for
marijuana. Following this discovery, then-President Ronald
Reagan instituted a Zero Tolerance drug policy across all the
U.S. Armed Forces.

Navy Academy grads, like mids,
face conduct scrutiny
1/6/2013: Scrutiny for
misconduct isn't something that ends when midshipmen finish
their four years at the Naval Academy. Of 23 commanding officers
relieved from Navy posts this year, eight were former
midshipmen. The majority were found to have conducted themselves
inappropriately.

Navy commemorates Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 21
1/7/2013:
The Navy will join the nation in observing Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. Day, Jan. 21. Navy commands are encouraged to reflect
on the recurring theme, "Remember! Celebrate Act! A Day On, Not
a Day Off!" and increase their knowledge and awareness of Dr.
King's contributions to American history and civil rights by
participating in military and community events.

2013

From "Battleship" to "Zero Dark Thirty," the Navy has had a run
of starring roles at the octoplex. But in 2013, Navy
entertainment options skew toward the home viewer, with at least
a half-dozen fleet related series in development.

Readout of SECNAV, CNO visits USNA
1/9/2013:
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Chief of Naval Operations Adm.
Jonathan W. Greenert visited the Naval Academy Jan. 7 to address
the Brigade of Midshipmen regarding the issue of sexual
harassment and assault, as well as the findings of the 2012
Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the U.S.
Military Service Academies.

Popularity of Naval Academy's STEM
summer program soars
1/10/2013:
High-schoolers hoping to spend a week this summer at the U.S.
Naval Academy's summer STEM program might need to polish their
applications. The week-long program - which gives rising eighth
through 11th graders experiences in science, technology,
engineering and math - will be accepting applications through
April 15. But attending isn't as easy as applying. Naval Academy
officials say the program has become increasingly competitive
since its inception in 2008.

Reggie Broddie isn't afraid to dream big. So when he arrived at
the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County in
1190, one of his goals was to get some of the children there

Eighty-seven students in 24th Company at the U.S. Naval
Academy will march in the presidential inaugural parade this
month. The company was chosen due to its status as the Brigade's
Color Company.

Pentagon orders sequestration
plans, cutbacks could impact USNA
1/13/2013:
Leaders at Fort George G. Meade and the U.S. Naval Academy must
present plans for slashing jobs and budgets by Feb. 1 to the
Pentagon as it prepares for budget cuts if Congress fails to
pass a new budget. Top Pentagon leadership ordered military
commanders Thursday to submit their plans for staff and
maintenance cuts as a precaution. The cuts could impact tens of
thousands of employees at Fort Meade and the Naval Academy.

Banging helmets to reduce brain
injuries
1/14/2013:
Driven by concern for athletes' concussions, Naval Academy
researchers have developed a relatively simple model for
understanding how brain injuries occur in helmet-to-helmet hits.
With further refinement, the model might help design more
protective headgear for football players, according to Murray
Korman, a physics professor at the Annapolis military college
who directed the study.

Midshipman shares experiences
studying Arabic in Oman

As the midshipmen begin their spring semester and start looking
at their options for summer training, Midshipman 2nd Class
Matthew Morrison shares his experiences in Oman last summer.
Morrison was accepted into a program with 11 other U.S. college
students to spend five weeks studying Arabic at the University
of Nizwa.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer and nation's
largest private employer, is making a pledge to boost its
sourcing from domestic suppliers and hire more than 100,000
recently discharged veterans in the next five years.

Navy medicine maintaining
readiness despite flu season
1/17/2013:
Navy medicine announced Jan. 15, its military
treatment facilities currently have sufficient amount of
influenza vaccinations to reduce the risk of the flu for service
members and beneficiaries despite the shortages experienced by
its civilian counterparts.

Academy instructor charged with
raping midshipman
1/18/2013: A Marine Corps
major, who served as a Naval Academy instructor, is charged with
allegedly raping a midshipman while having sex with another
midshipman in 2011 after the traditional croquet match between
the Naval Academy and St. John's College, according to Navy
documents.

Navy announces 2013 football
schedule
1/19/2013:
The Navy football team, coming off an 8-5 campaign that
saw the mids win the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy for the eighth
time in the last 10 years and appear in a bowl game for the
ninth time in the last 10 years, will face a challenging 2013
schedule that includes seven bowl teams from 2012 including a
Notre Dame team that played for the BCS National Championship.

5,500 troops to participate in
inauguration
1/21/2013:
As the world watches the commander in chief inaugurated
for a second term today in Washington, D.C., some 5,500 service
members are expected to take part in the pageantry, both in the
parade and behind the scenes.

Women's soccer earns NSCAA Team
Ethics Award
1/22/2013: The Navy women's soccer team
recently received the Team Ethics Award from the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Navy is one of just six
NCAA Division 1 programs to receive the Silver Awards. The award
recognizes programs that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior
and adherence to the laws of the game.

drum major award
1/24/2013:
The U.S. Naval Academy's Division of Professional Development
director the "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major Award" at
the 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards dinner at La
Fountaine Bleue in Glen Burnie, Maryland on January 18. Capt.
Stanley Keeve received the award which recognizes an individual
or organization that keeps the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. alive through their words, deeds and actions.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) recently sent out a
mandate that all letter mail being shipped to overseas military

route for renovations
1/30/2013:
Runners and visitors to the U.S. Naval Academy will have to
adjust their routes for the next several months as the school
undergoes renovations. The pedestrian gate on Prince George
Street is closed until May 2013 due to renovations of the
multipurpose gym in Halsey Field House.
