Naval Academy hosts motorcycle safety course
1/12011:
The Naval Academy Safety Department hosted motorcycle training sessions
with the Honda SMARTrainer during November and December. The
SMARTrainer is a motorcycle simulator that combines and advanced
safety training program with a video monitor, handlebar, seat,
foot pegs, shifter, active throttle and standard controls found
on a real motorcycle.
The simulator complements and reinforces the Motorcycle Safety
Foundation’s "SEE"
strategy - search, evaluate, execute - for managing risk,
allowing riders to experience and respond to a variety of
on-screen scenarios as they travel along streets and highways.

Naval Academy officers earn newest warfare pin
1/2/2011:
Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn conducted a ceremony at the
U.S. Naval Academy Dec. 2, recognizing seven officers for
receiving the information dominance warfare qualification. Lynn
also led a class discussion with midshipmen and joined the
Brigade of Midshipmen for noon meal before taking a tour of the
academy's
Cyber Security Center and presenting the new information
dominance officers with their qualification pins.

Blue Angels may be grounded for USNA Commissioning Week 2012

In 2012, the U.S. Naval Academy has made the decision to push
Commissioning Week back. But with that, comes an unintended
consequence. It appears that this move will jeopardize the Blue
Angel’s appearance in Annapolis.

Navy fires officer over lewd videos
1/4/2011: A high-ranking officer who
produced and showed raunchy videos to the crew of an aircraft
carrier three or four years ago is expected to be relieved of
his command of the ship. Capt. The Navy has chosen to replace
Capt. Owen Honors on the USS Enterprise, a nuclear-powered ship
that is currently stationed in Norfolk and scheduled to deploy
to the Middle East this month.

US, Chili improve interoperability in submarine rescue exercise
1/5/2011:
The
Navy's Deep Submergence Unit, along with members of the Chilean
navy's diesel electric submarine
CS Thomson (SS 20),
successfully completed a submarine rescue system exercise off
the coast of San Diego during the bi-lateral exercise CHILEMAR
II Oct. 27-28. The exercise required
Thomson to bottom
itself on the ocean floor, at a depth of approximately 450 feet,
to simulate a submarine casualty while members of the deep
submergence unit aboard the Military Sealift Command fleet ocean
tug USNS Sioux (T-ATF
171) deployed navy divers to perform a successful open-match
mating.

Poll shows Sailors learning positive stress coping behaviors

The

2010 Behavioral Health Quick Poll (BHQP) results indicate an
increased awareness of the Stress continuum and positive coping
behaviors; however, results also indicate an increase in
perceived operational stress among Sailors.

Navy orders F/A-18s from Boeing, worth $5.3 billion
1/7/2011:
The Navy is ordering $5.3 billion worth of F/A-18 Hornet aircraft from
Boeing Co. The orders include 66 Super Hornets and 58 of its new
Growlers, which are two-seat jets equipped with radar-jamming
equipment and other gear to knock out a wide array of electronic
devices.

The images of Navy's record-setting 1986 basketball
team
have
appeared for years in Navy's media guide and grace the
commemorative poster that will be given to all fans that attend
tonight's game against Bucknell. A once-in-a-lifetime
collection of players and coaches came together in 1986 to help
Navy achieve greatness on the basketball court. Led by Head
Coach Paul Evans and future Hall of Famer David Robinson, the
midshipmen fashioned a 30-5 record and advanced to the Elite
Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Midshipmen spend time with 'Wish
Kids'
1/9/2011:
Six midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy football team and the
team's head coach paused from an afternoon of rain-interrupted
practices to spend a few hours with local San Diego "Wish
Kids" Dec. 21. The Naval Academy football team
was in San Diego to compete against San Diego State University
in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl Dec. 23.

change of command ceremony Dec. 13 in Memorial Hall to recognize

Navy announces 2011 football schedule
1/11/2011:
Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced
Navy's
2011 football schedule, which will include
five games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium as well as the
annual Army-Navy game that will be played at FedEx Field in
Landover, Maryland. Navy will battle eight teams that played a
bowl game in 2010 and a Delaware team that is playing for the
FCS Championship against Eastern Washington.

USNA Men's Glee Club to perform in Chicago area
1/12/2011: Over the Martin Luther
King, Jr. holiday, the Naval Academy
Men's Glee Club, the most active of the Naval Academy's
musical organizations, will be performing in the Chicago area
January 15-17. Public performances on Saturday, Jan.15 include
an 11 a.m. concert at the DuSable Museum in Chicago and a 7:30
p.m.performance at the Village Church in Northbrook. On Jan.16,
performances will be at St. Anne's Church at 11 a.m. in
Barrington and Grace United Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m. in
Naperville. WGN Radio 720 will air a performance at 8:09 a.m. on
the Greg
Jarrett show. Tickets and admission are required at some of
the performance.

DOD evaluates sexual harassment and prevention
1/14/2011:
The Department of Defense (DoD) released key findings from the Academic
Program Year (APY) 2009-2010
Annual Report of Sexual
Harassment and Violence at the United States Military Service
Academies. The report also contains the results from the
2010 Service Academy
Gender Relations Survey. The academies saw an overall
increase in the number of sexual assault reports made to
authorities in APY 2009-2010. According to the survey results,
the department estimates fewer than 10 percent of incidents are
actually reported at the academies.

USNA superintendent welcomes back Brigade
1/15/2011:
The Naval Academy superintendent addressed the Brigade of Midshipmen Jan.
10, welcoming them back to the academy after two weeks of winter
break. Vice Adm. Michael Miller congratulated the midshipmen for
their academic, athletic and community relations accomplishments
during the previous semester.

Air Force Academy expects 12 percent budget cut
1/16/2011:
The Air Force Academy expects a budget cut of about $41 million, or 12.2
percent for the current fiscal year as the government tries to
rein in spending, but school officials say overall academics
won't suffer. West Point expects a much smaller cut, but
accurate comparisons are difficult because of differences in the
way each school's
budget is compiled. Naval Academy officials declined to
release budget projections but said they
don't
expect a big difference from last year.

Naval Academy puts cyber in new curriculum

The U.S. Naval Academy was established 166 years ago. In that time, the
academy's mission has not changed but how it meets
that mission has adapted. Cyber warfare has become a platform on
par with the major warfare platforms. The academy is evolving to
reflect these changing threats. Starting next fall,
cybersecurity courses will be more fully integrated into the
students'
curriculum.

Women's Glee Club was wowing audiences around the world. They

Navy hires all-time
winningest volleyball coach in NCAA history
1/20/2011:
Larry Bock, the winningest coach in collegiate volleyball
history, has been named the new head coach of the Navy women's
volleyball program. Bock has amassed an overall record of
1,352-283-4 (82.6%) in 34 seasons as the head coach of the
women's volleyball team at Juniata College and six years as the
school's men's volleyball coach. He has won nearly 200 more
matches than the coach with the next highest number of overall victories.

Naval Academy buildings evacuated
1/21/2011: Several buildings at the
U.S. Naval Academy were evacuated for nearly two hours Wednesday
afternoon after a suspicious package was found just outside of
the downtown Annapolis campus. The package was found outside of
Gate 3 about 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Mid charged with breaking into home expelled
1/22/2011:
A Naval Academy senior and
admiral's son, charged with breaking and entering an Annapolis home in early
December, has been kicked out of the academy. Michael Guadagnini
was discharged from the Naval Academy on Tuesday. The former
midshipman first class faces charges of breaking and entering
and malicious destruction of more than $500 worth of property
after he allegedly trespassed on an Annapolis residence on Dec.
2. His trial date is March 14.

Students dive into science with SeaPerch robot
1/23/2011:
Two naval officers and little build-it-yourself underwater robots are
helping create a new generation of scientists and engineers. As
part of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
outreach program at the Naval Academy recent USNA graduates
helped train teachers to build and incorporate SeaPerch, a
remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), in classrooms.

Navy SEAL candidates test their mettle
1/24/2011:
Three Naval Academy midshipmen are among some 160 athletes who will test
their mettle at the Arrowhead 135 Ultra Marathon in Minnesota at
the end of January. At the same time, they hope to raise
awareness and funds for the Special Operations Warrior
Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides support to
families of fallen and wounded special operations personnel,
including SEALS.

Seven mids expelled from academy over spice
1/25/2011:
Seven midshipmen were expelled last Thursday from the Naval Academy for
"use
or possession of spice," a marijuana-like designer drug banned
by the Navy, the school's
spokesman confirmed Monday. The former midshipmen were male
sophomores and juniors.

USNA the most popular liberal arts college, rankings say
1/26/2011: The U.S. Naval Academy has
been named the nation's most popular liberal arts college,
according to a ranking published by
U.S. News & World Report magazine. The academy tops the
magazine's popularity of schools based on its yield - the number
of accepted students who decide to enroll as freshmen. In the
fall of 2009, 1,251 of the 1,464 students accepted to the Naval
Academy chose to enroll, a yield of 85.5 percent.

Academy gets new training boats
1/27/2011:
The Naval
Academy's large new gray boat on the Severn River - No. 703 -
still has that new car smell. The 119-foot-long vessel, powered
by twin diesel engines, arrived in April, and No. 704 is to
arrive within weeks. Three more boats will come later in the
year; the Navy plans to ultimately replace all 18 of the
academy's current Yard Patrol boats. These vessels
train midshipmen in seamanship and navigation, and cost about
$8.7 million each. The boats have a life expectancy of 30 years.

Naval Academy settles with critical professor
1/30/2011:
The U.S. Naval Academy has settled a complaint brought by an English
professor who claimed he was wrongly denied a pay raise for
publically criticizing the
academy's
admissions policies. Bruce Fleming wrote an op-ed column in The
Capital in 2009 in which he claimed the academy had a two-tiered
admissions process intended to boost the number of minority
students.
