Naval Academy admissions under scrutiny
2/1/2011:
The Naval Academy will send appointment letters to the Class of 2015 this
week, and nearly all of the successful applicants will likely
accept. Some academy supporters say the school on the banks of
the Severn in Annapolis admits too many marginal students, most
of them minority students and recruited athletes.

Naval Academy holds symposium
2/2/2011:
There was a record turn-out for the Pensacola U.S. Naval Academy Symposium
Jan. 29 and
it's
getting bigger than ever. Organizers said more than 800 people
attended the event, compared to just 300 last year. The free
symposium is designed to give parents and their children
information about college opportunities through a service
academy or the ROTC.

Academy handling honor cases faster
2/3/2011:
The Naval Academy has reduced the time it takes to handle honor
cases, and has seen a decline in honor offenses, according to
the academy's commandant. Navy Capt. Robert E. Clark II (right)
said it now takes an average of 18 days from when an offense is
discovered to the time it is resolved. Also, according to Clark,
who assumed the commandant post in April, juniors and seniors
are committing fewer honor violations, and there has been a
reduction in repeat offender cases.

Air Force Academy sued over prayer luncheon speaker
2/4/2011:
The Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs is being sued for its
decision to invite a controversial conservative speaker to a
voluntary prayer event. The Academy, which has taken criticism
in recent years for forcing religious beliefs on students,
invited Marine 1st Lt. Clebe McClary, a nationally-known
motivational speaker, to speak at a voluntary National Prayer
Luncheon scheduled Feb. 10. The academy's
decision to host McClary, whose website declares "U.C.M.C.
will always mean a U.S. Marine for Christ," has drawn harsh
criticism from the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, and
activist that has long been a thorn in the side of the academy's
leadership.

GM executive visits academy
2/5/2011: The chief executive officer of
General Motors Company spoke to the Brigade of Midshipmen,
faculty and staff in Alumni Hall February 1 as a part of the
Naval Academy's Forrestal Lecture series, in conjunction with
the Naval Academy Leadership Conference. Daniel F. Akerson, a
1970 graduate of the Naval Academy, addressed the midshipmen of
the challenges they face in the near future, comparing current
world issues with what he and his classmates faced as they
neared graduation including the Cold War, Vietnam and
international civil unrest.

Navy's Dobbs showed pros scouts a thing a two
2/6/2011:
It's uncertain whether Ricky Dobbs will ever
get a chance to play professional football. However, the
record-setting Navy quarterback thought he proved he was an NFL
prospect while attending the 86th annual East-West Shrine game.
Dobbs was one of three quarterbacks on the East squad and posted
an impressive overall statistics in the game, which was held
January 22 at Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida.

Five U.S. Air Force cadets expelled for using "spice"
2/7/2011:
Five U.S. Air Force Academy cadets have been expelled and
another 25 are under investigation for using the drug "spice," a synthetic substance that mimics the effects of marijuana. The
announcement by the academy, located in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, comes days after the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis,
Maryland, expelled seven midshipmen for the use of spice.

Navy to play Hawaii
2/8/2011: University of Hawai'i
Athletics Director Jim Donovan announced a two-year football
contract with the Naval Academy during the 2013 and 2015
seasons. The teams will play Nov. 9, 2013 at Navy-Marine Corps
Memorial Stadium in Annapolis and Nov. 28, 2015 at Aloha Stadium
in Honolulu.

Navy announces new uniform components
2/9/2011:
The chief of naval operations approved Navy Uniform Board recommendations
Jan. 25. The recommendations include a new cutlass for chiefs,
an overblouse for female officers and chiefs, updated rules for
portable communication devices and clarification on the matter
or wear for flight suits.

USNA places 57 student-athletes on honor roll
2/10/2011: The Naval Academy had 57
varsity athletes in five sports earn Patriot League Academic
Honors for the fall. To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll,
a student-athlete must earn a 3.2 grade-point average in the
semester of their sport's competition.

Mids conduct weapons familiarization course
2/11/2011:
The Naval
Academy's
Semper Fi Society, in
conjunction with the High-Powered Rifle and Combat Arms Teams,
conducted a weapons familiarization course for midshipmen Dec. 4
at the Naval Support Activity Annapolis armory. Forty midshipmen
participated in the course, which consisted of two shooting
stations, one for the M1014 joint service combat shotgun and one
for the mounted M240B machine gun. Each midshipman fired 10-15
rounds from each weapon.

Naval Academy seniors take first step toward fleet
2/12/2011: More than 250 future
surface warfare officers (SWO) are one step closer to the fleet
after selecting their first ships at the Naval Academy's "Ship
Selection" night Feb. 3. The midshipmen chose their future
assignments at a ceremony held at the Naval Academy's Mahan Hall
auditorium, where Vice Adm. D.C. Curtis, commander, Naval
Surface Forces, was in attendance to speak to the seniors and
welcome them to the fleet. Midshipmen from the Class of 2011 had
the opportunity to select their first ships, with selections
made based on the midshipmen's order of merit.

Naval Academy prep school under fire
2/13/2011: A Naval Academy graduate
has asked Congress to investigate - and possibly abolish - the
academy's prep school. According to Alfred W. Tate, Class of
1964, the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) has become a
way to "red shirt" recruited athletes and give unqualified
minority students a back door into the Naval Academy.

The chief engineer and deputy commander for Naval Systems Engineering at
Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., addressed
midshipmen, faculty and staff Feb. 8 as part of the Division of
Engineering and
Weapons'
Distinguished Lecture Series. Rear Adm.
Tom Eccles spoke about his involvement in the investigation of
the March 26, 2010 sinking of the South Korean warship ROKS
Cheonan (PCC-772).

Midshipmen Eagle Scouts host annual jamboree
2/16/2011:
More than 400 scouts and 50 Eagle Scout midshipmen came together Jan. 15
at the 24th annual Naval Academy National Eagle Scout
Association Jamboree. Over 50 of the nearly 400 Eagle Scout
midshipmen on the yard came out to instruct a wide variety of
merit badge classes, including weather, astronomy and fire
safety. Some midshipmen taught first aid and personal fitness
while others taught more technical skills such as radio use and
introduction to space exploration.

Former NSA, CIA director addresses mids on cyber security
2/18/2011:
A former director for the National Security and Central Intelligence
Agencies visited the Naval Academy Feb. 7 to address midshipmen,
faculty and staff about their challenge of developing government
policy for cyber security. Retired Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden
discussed several issues that make developing cohesive cyber
policy difficult, including differing definitions of cyber
security and its potential impact on the world.

MAG shares meal with wounded veterans
2/19/2011: Eleven midshipmen from the
Naval Academy's Midshipmen Action Group (MAG) served food to
wounded veterans and their families Jan. 30 at the National
Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The midshipmen set
up a buffet at the hospital with food purchased from a local
restaurant chain and spent some time talking to the veterans and
their visiting family members.

Centennial of Naval aviation launches at NAS North Island
2/20/2011:
Naval
Air Station North Island (NASNI), the "Birthplace
of Naval Aviation," served as the location for the official kick-off of the Centennial
of Naval Aviation (CoNA) celebration Feb. 12, as thousands of
visitors attended a special Open House and Parade of Flight. The
first successful hydroaeroplane flight took place at the base in
1911, just eight years after the famed 1903 Wright
brothers' flight in North Carolina.

VITA program helps academy with tax preparation
2/21/2011:
The Naval Academy and Naval
Support Activity Annapolis Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) Program opened for business Jan. 31 to provide free tax
assistance. VITA offers free tax preparation and electronic
filing to active-duty and retired service members, Department of
Defense civilian employees and families through April 15.
Midshipmen can also take advantage of the VITA program in
Bancroft Hall.

Naval Academy midshipman honored for volunteer service
2/22/2011:
A Naval Academy midshipman has been selected as Mentor of the Year by the
Volunteer Center of Anne Arundel County.
Midshipman First Class Natalie Logan, a chemistry major,
will accept the award at the 2011 Mentoring Awards ceremony.
Logan tutors students on Saturday mornings in math and
science.

USNA participating in security exercise
2/23/2011: The Naval Academy is just
one of the many installations throughout the continental United
States, Guam and Hawaii participating this week in Exercise
Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield, the nation's largest
anti-terrorism exercise. Naval Academy visitors should expect
increased traffic and delays near entrances to the Yard, as well
as additional security screening.

Stranded West Point cadets saved in daring, dramatic rescue
2/26/2011:
The NYPD pulled off a dangerous and dramatic rescue on Sunday, dangling a
detective from a helicopter in ferocious winds to rescue West
Point cadets who were freezing to death on a mountain ledge. Two
freshman cadets who had gone to practice rappelling on Storm
King Mountain got stuck on a tiny ledge about 6 p.m. on
Saturday. They called 911 from a cell phone. Eight hours later,
the cadets were still stranded on the 18-inch-wide rocky ledge,
clinging to a tree as winds gusted to 50 mph and temperatures
dropped below 20 degrees with the wind chill. The cadets were
wearing fatigues and inadequate fleece jackets; hypothermia
quickly set in.

Plebe is eighth midshipman expelled for spice
2/27/2011:
The Naval Academy has expelled an eighth midshipman for use and possession
of the marijuana-like drug spice, in connection with a
wide-ranging investigation that began last fall. Seven
midshipmen were kicked out of school in January, after a
midshipman tipped off academy officials last fall to spice usage
in the brigade.

Naval Academy accepting application for STEM program
2/28/2011:
The Naval Academy is accepting applications through March 31 for the
academy's summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) Program 2011. The program is held in three sessions
for rising students in good academic standing in grades 8-11 who
have an interest in math and science.
