One umbrella for Annapolis and Naval
Academy?
2/1/08: The city of Annapolis has long been identified
as the home of the U.S. Naval Academy. Under an ordinance before
the City Council, the Naval Academy would be officially included
in the city limits, a move that would boost the city's
population for the 2010 U.S. Census and bring more grant money.

Bush signs revised bill, 3.5 percent raise a go
2/2/08:
President Bush on Monday signed into law a defense bill that
authorizes a 3.5 percent pay raise for troops and addresses his
concerns about exposing Iraq to costly lawsuits.

Internship provides
"cool" opportunity
2/3/08:
Many Midshipmen look forward to spending their hard-earned
vacations in tropical locales, unwinding on a white, sandy beach
or poolside at some warm, sunny getaway. Very few vacation plans
include a visit to the South Pole.
Two Midshipmen had the opportunity of a lifetime over the
holiday break, traveling to Antarctica as part of an internship
sponsored by the Naval
Academy's
oceanography department.

Broadcasts bring Super Bowl to sailors
at sea
2/4/08: Along with their comrades deployed to Iraq
and Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world, sailors and Marines
aboard ships in the Pacific watched the pinnacle of pigskin live
yesterday. Over the last couple of years, at the Navy's request,
Raytheon has provided the Super Bowl to surface ships in the
Pacific. The agreement with Armed Forces Radio and Television
Service allows them to broadcast over the Pacific waters.

Jacobs, believed to be the last surviving member of the group of
Marines photographed during the original U.S. flag-raising on
Iwo Jima during World War II, has died at age 82.

Scholar: Diversity key to military
strength
2/6/08: Military officers must understand that diversity
is a reality, and mentor future leaders from all ethnic groups,
a speaker told an audience of almost 5,000 at the Naval Academy
Feb. 4. The talk was part of the Forrestal Lecture Series, a
group of lectures presented by visiting scholars each year.

Navy announces 2008 football schedule
2/8/08: The
Navy football team and new head coach
Ken Niumatalolo will face an extremely challenging schedule
in 2008 with five teams from BCS conference and four programs
who earned bowl bids in 2007 highlighting the slate. Season
tickets for the 2008 season go on sale Tuesday, Feb. 12 at
Navy Sports. Season
tickets are $222, which includes all five games at Navy-Marine
Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis and the Notre Dame game at
M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. A season parking pass will cost
$75.

Academy fosters electric dream
Midshipmen design biometric programs and cell phone technology
for car
2/11/08: The two-seat green car looks even tinier
than it usually would, parallel parked in a hallway next to a
display of a torpedo. But it is playing a big role as a mobile
project platform for the academy's electrical and computer
engineering department. The engineering program has had many
project vehicles over the years, including solar-powered boats
and small spacecraft But this is the first year for the
GEM car.

USPS offers new
military flat-rate boxes
2/12/08:
After March 3, the US Postal Service
is offering a new flat-rate box that is 50 percent larger
and delivered for $10.95 to an APO/FPO address, $2 less than
domestic destinations. The dimensions are 12" x 12" x 5.5".
You can begin ordering them Feb. 20 at
USPS online site or
by calling 800-610-8734. Some of the boxes are co-branded
with the logo of America Supports You, which is a
Department of Defense program that connects citizens
offering support to the military and their families. The $2
discount will be applied when the flat-rate boxes are
shipped to an APO/FPO destination. The two other
existing flat-rate boxes, retailing for $8.95, are not
available for the military discount.

America's most popular colleges
2/13/08:
U.S. News &
World Report ranked liberal arts colleges according to a
school's
yield, the percentage of applicants accepted who ultimately enroll
at that institution. Using fall 2006 data, the United States
Naval Academy had a 14% acceptance rate, a yield of 81% and was
ranked No. 20.

Hundredth Night
2/14/08:
Today marks 100 days from graduation.
Historically, Plebes used to switch places with Firsties and
take the reigns of power. This tradition was halted in 2003, as
it was deemed unbecoming of an officer. The day is still
celebrated, usually with a special dinner menu and other perks
for First Class Midshipmen. |

Halls are alive with music
2/15/08:
Teamwork, discipline and mental focus are all part of the
experience for Midshipmen at the Naval Academy. They come
together in perhaps a lesser-known way in the
academy's
music department, which will present the Midshipmen Classical
Concert on Sunday and a two-weekend run starting Feb. 22 of the
academy's
winter musical, Guys and Dolls. Midn. Jessica Troska
‘08 (parents: WISNAPA members Keith & Lois Troska, Anoka,
Minnesota) is part of the production.

Navy tasked with destroying satellite
2/16/08: The Navy will attempt to shoot down an
unresponsive spy satellite before it enters the Earth's
atmosphere because of concerns that the rocket fuel on board
could harm people when it crashes. The Navy has been working on
software modifications for three weeks and will deploy three
Aegis-equipped ships to intercept the 5,000-pound National
Reconnaissance Office Imagery satellite somewhere in the
northern hemisphere of the Pacific Ocean in the coming weeks.

Academy leadership conference goes
beyond boundaries
2/17/08: Alumni Hall was more crowded than usual for the
Naval Academy's most recent Forrestal Lecture. USNA hosted
nearly 200 student leaders and faculty from around the country
from Feb. 3-6, making this the largest and most successful
conference yet. The theme, Leadership Beyond Boundaries
prompted students from 30 different schools to engage issues of
cultural, social and intellectual diversity.

Naval Academy celebrates Black History with local community
2/18/08:
The U.S. Naval Academy joined together with the Annapolis
community to participate in a Black History Month celebration
earlier this month. The celebration included performances from
the Naval Academy Gospel Choir and the First Baptist Church Mass
Choir. In his remarks, Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm.
Jeffrey L. Fowler addressed the importance of diversity within
the military ranks and ensuring opportunities are available for
all.

New tech extends produce freshness at
sea
2/19/08: The days of wilted lettuce and brown
bananas at sea could be numbered. This winter, the aircraft
carrier Ronald Reagan is serving as a test bed for a simple,
innovative storage system that its makers say will keep produce
fresh long enough to get the ship to the next underway
replenishment.

Stricter rules a "Reality check" for
Navy students
2/20/08: Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler, the
superintendent of USNA, was on NPR's Morning Edition on
Feb. 19. He spoke about restricted extracurricular activities,
increased study hours and made all Midshipmen eat together in an
effort to improve leadership training for seniors. The
Midshipmen initially grumbled about the rules, but now many
recognize the need to refocus.

NASA MidSTAR-1 successful technologies
may be revolutionary
2/21/08: Two new technologies launched onboard a
U.S. Naval Academy satellite called MidSTAR-1 have proven
successful in their tests in space. One technology is a sensor
that can check for harmful chemicals and the other is a special
"film" that can control heat.

Navy offers cash, perks for foreign languages
2/23/08:
The Navy is offering extra cash, college credit and more to
sailors who can prove their foreign language skills. The Navy
Foreign Language Program Office boosted its foreign language
proficiency bonus program last year, altering previous
restrictions on foreign language skill pay. In addition to extra
pay, sailors are eligible to earn college credits if they score
high enough on language tests available through the Navy College
Office.

2/24/08: On Feb. 19, the Naval Academy hosted a
ceremony in Memorial Hall honoring the 2007 Naval Academy
Sailors of the Year, which pays tribute to the Navy's
outstanding sailors. The award was extremely competitive with
outstanding candidates from throughout the Naval Academy.

GAO: Change needed at military academies
2/27/08:
The Defense Department has
"only
minimally" addressed congressional
interest in how well sexual assault prevention programs are
working at the
nation's
military academies, a recent government report released found.
The General Accountability Office (GAO) report said the
department
has "not been conducting a comprehensive and integrated analysis of academy data
or programs before forwarding academy reports to
Congress."

Bronze Star is honored, not denied
2/28/08: Navy Lt. Melvin Spence Dry (USNA '68)
dropped out of a helicopter into choppy waters off the coast of
Vietnam in June 1972. On a highly classified mission to rescue
two escaped American prisoners of war, he died the moment he hit
the water. But,
because the mission was top-secret, Dry's valor went officially
unrecognized until Feb. 25. In a ceremony in the academy's
hallowed Memorial Hall that was attended by the chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dry was awarded the Bronze Star
posthumously.

Lawmaker pushes 3.9% military raise in
2009
2/29/08: A Republican lawmaker assigned by his
party to work on military and veterans' issues has become the
first member of Congress to introduce legislation providing a
bigger pay raise to troops in 2009 than proposed by the Bush
administration, which is 3.4%.
