Midshipmen lead the way in 2008
election
3/1/08: In December 2007, a small group of
Midshipmen planned and launched "Operation Vote!" aimed at
increasing voter registration among Midshipmen. "Operation
Vote!" had an ambitious goal - registering and requesting
absentee ballots for the 4,400-strong Brigade of Midshipmen.

Spring WISNAPA meeting highlights
3/2/08: The WISNAPA spring meeting was held at the
Delafield Brewhaus on Saturday, March 1.
Class of 2012: Blue & Gold State Coordinator, Craig
Walker, indicated 22 appointments have been offered, one of the
largest in Wisconsin's history. Eight candidates accepted
appointments with eight outstanding offers, three outstanding
Letters of Assurance (LOAs) offers, one NAPS, one Foundation
scholarship and one appointment was declined.
501(c)3 Status: Maureen Fitzsimmons Vanden Heuvel sent an
E-mail indicating the 501(c)3 has been approved by the IRS. All
donations will be tax deductible as of the filing date of
November 2, 2006.
Plebe & Plebe Parent Handbooks: Members voted to provide
handbooks online instead of making paper copies. Parents of
incoming Plebes will be given handbook summaries along with
helpful web sites in lieu of making hard copies.
Jan Haupt agreed to
update the handbooks, but requested a parent from the Class of
2011 to proof and update information. Contact Jan if you're
willing to help.
Summer Meeting: John
Kelling is looking for volunteers to help with the summer
meeting. Various committees and tasks are needed, including
sponsor families. If interested, contact John.
All Academies Military Ball: Proceeds from the event
netted a $4,079.73 profit.
Next Meeting: The summer meeting will be held at the
Charcoal Grill & Rotisserie, 15375 W. Greenfield Ave.,
New Berlin on Saturday, June 7. Information will be
updated on the web site as it becomes available. |

New York christened powered by
memories, resolve
3/3/08: The Navy's newest
amphibious transport dock was christened New York March
1. With seven-and-a-half tons of steel recovered from New York
City's World Trade Center forged into its bow stem and hundreds
of New York City first responders in attendance for the
ceremony, the ship's motto "Strength forged through sacrifice.
Never Forget," was heard loud and clear.

Capt. Margaret Klein, issued a parent's letter on Feb. 29. She
discusses a variety of topics including the Feb. 21 Orders
Assignment Night, the Navy men's basketball team, Black History

Mids contribute to books for international goodwill program
3/5/08:
On Feb. 16, 27th Company organized a special Saturday
Morning Training (SMT) in support of the Books for International
Goodwill (B.I.G.) Project, bundling 5,000 books and six
encyclopedia sets meant specifically for a Zambian school and
AIDS clinic. WISNAPA members' Mids from 27th Company
include Midn.1/C Andrew Clingman (Steve & Sue Clingman,
Brookfield) and Midn. 3/C Andrew Scherer (John & Janis
Scherer, Delavan).

Mids can apply for summer duty overseas
3/6/08:
Starting this year, Naval Academy Midshipmen will be able to
volunteer to spend four weeks each summer working at American
embassies and for nongovernmental organizations in developing
nations. A Naval Academy spokeswoman said all but Plebes would
be eligible to apply for overseas duty, regardless of the
Mid's major,
and that each application would be evaluated on a case-by-case
basis. She estimated from 10 to 12 Midshipmen would be picked
each summer and that embassy duty would be one way to satisfy a
professional development requirement that every Midshipmen must
meet.

What's life on an aircraft
carrier really like?
3/7/08:
PBS will be airing a special 10-part series filmed onboard the
USS Nimitz, a nuclear aircraft carrier, April 27-May 1. The
programs follow a core group of film participants, from the
admiral of the strike group to the fighter pilots to the
youngest sailors, as they navigate personal conflicts.

What happens after the crash?
3/8/08: As the Brigade of Midshipmen prepares to
embark on spring break, Naval Academy leadership held an all
hands safety stand down in Alumni Hall March 3. Aimed at
reducing accidents and injuries during spring break, the safety
stand down included an address from Commandant of Midshipmen
Capt. Margaret Klien, a presentation delivered by the brigade
safety officer and a brief called Street Smart, presented
by two firefighter/paramedics working for Stay Alive From
Education (S.A.F.E.)

New Bancroft Hall ID card policy
3/9/08:
Beginning March 3, all personnel conducting business in or
transiting through Bancroft Hall, including all Midshipmen, will
be required to visibly display their government-issued
identification card. The new ID card policy is just one of
several new force protection measures designed to increase
security on the Naval Academy grounds and to align the
academy's
anti-terrorism and force protection programs with Fleet
standards.

Naval Academy Alumni CEO steps down
3/11/08: The CEO of the Naval Academy Foundation
and its sister group the Naval Academy Alumni Association has
resigned. George P. Watt Jr., a 1973 graduate of the Naval
Academy, has headed the academy's two alumni groups since March
2000.

USNA's flag-dipping under fire
3/12/08: The ritual of dipping the American flag
before the alter at the Naval Academy Chapel has come under
fire, and one group plans to ask a federal court to put an end
to the practice. In the only known ritual of its kind in the
Navy, the color guard at the academy chapel dips the American
flag and the academy flag when they are carried before the alter
cross during the 11 a.m. Sunday Protestant service.

Private fundraising helps Naval Academy
3/13/08:
During Adm. Charles
Larson's second tour as superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, an alumnus
suggested he create a foundation to raise
"walking-around money" for the academy. Larson set up what would become the U.S. Naval
Academy Foundation, moving the military academy into private
fundraising like other institutions of higher learning, and in
1996 that same alumnus gave him a $300,000 check to get the ball
rolling.

More academy grads pointed to Corps
3/14/08: More Naval Academy and Naval Reserve
Officer Training Corps midshipmen are going Marine, as the Navy
expands opportunities for officers to head the Corps to help the
service reach its 202,000 end-strength goal. The academy's 2008
graduating class will have 235 Marine assignments, up more than
10 percent from two years ago.

Academy asking for new kitchen
3/17/08:
The Naval Academy is looking to modernize its kitchen and hire
more cooks, academy leaders said on March 4 while briefing the
school's
civilian oversight board. The academy recently renovated its
dining hall but not its kitchen. The academy is looking to
recruit ore government employees as cooks, and to phase out the
contract positions.

Mid named Bill and Melinda Gates Cambridge Scholar
3/17/08:
Midn. 1/C William Eucker IV of Thirteenth Company has been named
a 2008 Bill and Melinda Gates Cambridge Scholar. As a Gates
Scholar, Eucker will study at Cambridge University in England
for two years in the areas of science and technology policy and
condensed matter physics.

NASA MidSTAR-1 successful technologies
may be revolutionary
3/19/08: Two new technologies launched onboard a
U.S. Naval Academy satellite called MidSTAR-1 have proven
successful in their tests in space. One technology is a sensor
that can check for harmful chemicals and the other is a special
"film" that can control heat.

Midshipmen experience Civil War sloop
3/20/08:
A Tenth Company officer brought a new dimension when she took
her Plebes and some upper class to Baltimore to spend the night
aboard the 19th century sloop of war, USS
Constellation. The officer originally brought the idea of the
Constellation to Yarbrough during a brainstorming session for
the semester. She saw the opportunity to give her Plebes a new
perspective on naval history integrated with a solid
team-building experience.

NAVSEA commander describes engineering Navy challenges
3/21/08:
Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Vice Adm. Paul E.
Sullivan visited the Naval Academy last month as part of the Raouf
Memorial Lecture Series. Sullivan, Class of 1974, spoke
with engineering students about the particular challenges of
expanding the Navy and encompassing new technologies into that
expansion.

For Mids, art imitates life
3/22/08: In a dark theater, Midshipmen took turns
stepping alone into a single spotlight and breaking the solemn
silence with tales of their time in the sandbox. This was the
scent at "Forward Deployed: Priors Remembering War" in Mahan
Hall on March 4. The program presented monologues from prior
enlisted Midshipmen who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Learning to deal with uncertainty
3/23/08:
Lt. Andrew Roy, 14th Company Officer, has some
important advice for the Class of 2008 as they get closer to
joining the Navy and Marine Corps' officer ranks. "They need to
get used to the idea of unpredictability," said Roy, Class of
2001. "They should be mentally and emotionally prepared for
uncertainty."

3/24/08: When Navy opens spring football practice
today, it will mark the first step toward achieving the goal of
a winning season and a school record sixth straight bowl berth.
However, there is a strong possibility the Midshipmen could
reach six wins and still be shut out of the postseason in 2008.

Navy Reserve commander asks to retire
3/27/08: Vice Adm. John G. Cotton, who
has served as chief of Navy Reserve since October 2003, has
turned in his retirement package. The Navy Reserve's deputy
chief and WISNAPA member, Rear Adm. Dirk Debbink
(Matthew '11), is now serving as acting chief of Navy
Reserve.

Johnnies vs. USNA
3/28/08:
The 26th Annual Croquet match between St.
John's
College and the U.S. Naval Academy will be held starting at 1
p.m. Sunday, April 20. The winner will take home the Annapolis
Cup, which is housed in the front window of 49 West Coffeehouse.
Passersby can view the trophy, which is adorned with the colors
of the winning team.

demand for technically skilled junior officers, Naval Academy
leadership is focused on raising the number of Midshipmen
majoring in technical disciplines to 65% of those being

Retired admiral tell Midshipmen of lives being saved in Africa
3/31/08:
On March 19, Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer spoke to chemistry majors
at the Naval Academy about the
President's
Malaria Initiative (PMI). Ziemer leads this $1.2 billion, five-year
program which supports 15 African nations in an effort to reduce
the burden of malaria, a mosquito-transmitted disease that kills
a child in Africa every 30 seconds.
