Assistant Secretary to speak at Naval Academy
3/1/2011: Rose E. Gottemoeller,
Assistant Secretary for Arms Control, Verification and
Compliance, and chief negotiator to the New START Treaty will
speak to the midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy on March 2
about the New START Treaty and the United States' broad efforts
to advance arms control and nuclear security goals.

Bone marrow donation drive for academy grad
3/2/2011:
U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen and members of the Midshipmen Action Group
(MAG) conducted a bone marrow donation drive Feb. 18 in search
of a bone marrow match for Ensign Colin Smith, Class of 2009.
Almost 1,400 midshipmen registered to donate by giving a sample
of saliva which will then be analyzed for a possible match.

The midshipmen ended their season on a high note as the hockey captain
hoisted the Crabpot trophy, as the mids became the champions of
the 34th Annual Crabpot tournament.

Mids study Chinese in Beijing
3/4/2011:
Six Naval Academy midshipmen spent the fall semester in an intensive
Chinese language program while living in Beijing, China. They
took a pledge to speak only Chinese during their four-month stay
in the
country's capital city.

Academy's ring of honor
3/5/2011: Boxing event symbolizes
values academy teachers. Midshipman 4/C Astrid Duran never
imagined becoming a boxer when she showed up at the Naval
Academy last summer. However, the California native was
introduced to the sport during plebe summer and discovered she
enjoyed it. She reached the pinnacle when she captured one of
two women's championships at the 70th annual Brigade Boxing
Championships.

3/8/2011:
The 32nd Naval Academy Safety at Sea Seminar will be held April 2-3 in
Alumni Hall, and will focus on offshore as well as inshore
safety issues, and have poignant programs for cruisers and
racing sailors.

Naval Academy adds cybersecurity courses
3/9/2011:
In the first significant change to the core curriculum in 10 years, the
Naval Academy is adding two mandatory cybersecurity courses
aimed at preparing junior officers for today's warfare. The
first course will be required next spring for freshmen, or
plebes, in the Class of 2015. The second required course will
start with the Class of 2015's junior year. The plebe course
will focus on recognizing cyber risks and threats. The mandatory
junior course will be more technical, and emphasize computer
network defenses.

Virus hits swimmers at Naval Academy pool meet
3/10/2011: State authorities are still trying to
identify the intestinal bug that hit swimmers at a meet in
Annapolis this weekend, sickening dozens. None had to be
hospitalized, state officials said. About 800 athletes, ages 9
to 17, came from across the state to participate in the 2011
Maryland Swimming Championship Meet, held at the Naval Academy
pool. State officials estimate more than 100 athletes were
stricken with the illness.

Mids beat Bucknell; play Saturday for NCAA Tournament
3/11/2011: The Navy women's basketball
team is in the league title for the first time since 1999. They
will play in the championship game of the Patriot League
Tournament. The Mids earned the privilege to play for a berth in
the NCAA Tournament by posting a 55-41 victory over Bucknell
Wednesday night in the semifinal round contest.

Blue Angels to miss Commissioning Week in 2012
3/12/2011:
The thunderous air show that has rattled rooftops and thrilled generations
of Annapolitans each may is taking a break - at least for 2012.
After performing for decades at Naval Academy Commissioning Week
ceremonies, the Blue Angels flight demonstration team plans just
a flyover - not so much as a roll or a dive - during the
graduation ceremony on May 29, 2012.

Spring WISNAPA meeting highlights
3/13/2011: Approximately 30 people
attended the spring WISNAPA meeting on March 12 at the EAA
Oshkosh. Meeting highlights are noted below:
Class of 2015: Area Blue & Gold Coordinator
Craig Walker indicated there are 213 applications for the Class
of 2015, 69 of which have completed 100 percent of their
application. To day, the academy has given 20 offers of
appointments with six acceptances and three declines.
Army/Navy game Dec. 10, 2011: Hotels in the
Washington, D. C. area were provided. Members decided it would
be better to stay in the Annapolis area and secure
transportation to/from the game, possibly partnering with the
USNA Alumni Association for transportation. Members are reminded
to order the maximum number of tickets to reserve seats in the
WISNAPA section. The WISNAPA web site will provide a ticket
exchange link to buy/sell tickets.
WISNAPA web site: The server conversion is in
progress (note: conversion completed two hours after
conclusion of WISNAPA meeting)
Yardtales: A motion was accepted for
the WISNAPA board to develop a plan for securing Yardtales
with the understanding that submissions (photos and articles)
are provided with the intent to publish . Parents are reminded
to use caution when submitting "sensitive" information for the
publication.
All-Academy Military Ball: The De Villers were
commended, along with many others, for coordinating another
successful ball. Maggie Coulson provided information to sell
polo shirts as a fundraiser with proceeds going towards the
ball. A motion was made to establish an Academy Ball committee,
with the chair to act as the WISNAPA representative for two
years and to coordinate the 2013 ball and to include this
possible fundraiser.
Election of officers: Jan Heinitz was voted to
be the incoming vice president. She is currently the club's
treasurer and will need a replacement. If interested, contact
Steve Voigt.

meeting: June 4, 2011 at the Country Springs Hotel
in Pewaukee.

Women's basketball rallies to win league title
3/14/2011: In the classic tale of two
halves, the Navy women's basketball team staged one of its
largest rallies in school history on the program's biggest
stage, the championship game of the Patriot League Tournament
Saturday night. After falling behind by 12 points to American at
halftime, the Midshipmen allowed the Eagles to score just 10
second-half points as Navy posted a 47-40 victory to claim the
first title in the school's tow-decade membership in the league.
The victory also advances Navy into its first NCAA tournament.

Academy expels three more mids for 'spice'
use
3/15/2011:
The Naval Academy on Tuesday expelled three more midshipmen for
the use or peddling of "spice,"
a marijuana-like synthetic drug, after a wide-ranging
investigation begun last fall. That brings the total number of
mids ousted to 11, with seven expelled in January and one kicked
out in February.

Naval Academy keeping Herndon Climb
3/16/2011: The Naval Academy is
keeping the annual Herndon Monument Climb. It will be held at
1:30 p.m. May 23 and will be open to the public with
identification. Plebes scale the greased obelisk as a rite of
passage to mark the end of their freshmen year. The previous
superintendent considered canceling the event, and ordered the
monument not be greased last year. The grease has been
re-ordered.

#14 Navy to face #3 DePaul in NCAA Tournament
3/17/2011:
The NCAA announced its brackets for the women's basketball tournament
Monday and rewarded Navy with a No. 14 seed in the championship.
The Midshipmen will face No. 3 DePaul Saturday afternoon at the
Bryce Jordan Center on the Penn State campus in University Park,
Pennsylvania.

Naval Academy introduces new major
3/18/2011:
The Naval Academy is offering a new major, based in the
academy's mathematics department,
which will be available to the Class of 2014 and beyond.
Operations research is a branch of applied mathematics that
deals with developing computational and mathematical models for
optimal decision making within large organizations. It is a
modern, interdisciplinary subject that uses science, technology
engineering and mathematical methods to solve large-scale
optimization problems in the real world.

Midshipmen volunteer for spring break
3/19/2011:
It's spring break for some college students,
but while most are hitting the beach, a dozen Navy midshipmen
are spending time helping others on the Crow Indian Reservation.
Their spring break projects included everything from fixing up a
barn to building a wheel chair ramp for an elderly woman who had
trouble walking in and out of her home.

3/20/2011: Lacking in height and athleticism to national power DePaul, Navy
never backed down. It wasn't until the game's closing minutes
that the third-seeded Blue Demons could finally breathe east in
a 56-43 win over 14th-seeded Navy in the NCAA tournament.

Midshipmen run 5K for alcohol awareness
3/22/2011:
Naval Academy midshipmen, faculty and staff participated in the HERO 5K
Run March 7 as part of Alcohol Awareness Week. The run sponsored
by the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers, in memory of
academy graduate Ensign John Elliott (USNA 2000) who was killed
in New Jersey in July 2000, in a collision with a drunk driver.

Red and black at Annapolis
3/23/2011: Prior to the 2010
Poinsettia Bowl, San Diego State University president Stephen L. Weber
challenged the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy to a friendly
wager. If the Aztecs beat the Midshipmen, Vice Admiral Michael Miller
would have to wear a SDSU jersey and hat on campus for a day, and vice
versa. The Aztecs won 35-14. And Vice Adm. Miller is a man of his word.

Ex-midshipman accused of Annapolis break-in avoids conviction
3/24/2011:
A former Naval Academy midshipman, who is a rear admiral's son
and baseball star, will perform community service and pay
restitution to the owner of the Annapolis home he is accused of
breaking into, in an agreement that calls for criminal charges
to be dropped.

Naval Academy announces football schedules for 2012 and
2013
3/25/2011: Naval Academy Director of
Athletics Chet Gladchuk released the projected football schedule
for 2012 and 2013. Navy will open up the 2012 campaign on Sept.
1 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland against the Notre Dame
Fighting Irish. Information and tour packages are available.

Naval Academy to restore Friday graduation
3/26/2011: In 2013, the Naval Academy
will resume holding commissioning on the Friday before Memorial
Day. The change means the Blue Angels could resume their
traditional pre-commissioning Annapolis performance. But an
appearance is not guaranteed, according to a flight team
spokesman, because the 2013 schedule has not been made.

Naval Academy presents International Ball
3/28/2011:
The U.S. Naval Academy will present the 45th annual International Ball on
Saturday, April 16. The event is open to the public. Tickets are
required. The annual International Ball is a formal event to
celebrate and honor the international midshipmen and officers at
the academy and to broaden international exposure for the
midshipmen.

USNA gospel choir performs in South Korea
3/30/2011:
The U.S. Naval Academy Gospel Choir traveled to South Korea
March 11-20 for its first international spring tour. The choir
landed in the city of Incheon and spent the first several days
touring the Seoul and singing in local schools and churches,
including the Kwaglim Methodist Church and the Soong Eui
Girls'
High School.

Senators say 'spice'
use could affect readiness
3/31/2011:
The military's struggle to come to grips with the marijuana-like synthetic
cannabinoids collectively known as "spice"
have raised alarms with two influential senators who say that
the products "pose
a risk to the operational readiness of our armed forces." In a letter Tuesday to Secretary Robert Gates, Senators Charles Grassley,
R-Iowa, and Dianne Feinstein, D-California, expressed particular
concern over high-profile spice busts by the Navy aboard the amphibious assault ship
Bataan and at the Naval Academy.
