Naval Academy
accepting application for STEM Camp
3/2/2010:
Applications are now being accepted through April 1 for the
Naval Academy's Summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math) Program 2010. The academy's Summer STEM Program is a
six-day academic camp designed for rising 8th-11th grade students in good academic standing who have an interest in math and
science. The camp is held in three sessions: June 7-12 for
rising 8th-9th graders, June 14-19 for rising 10th graders and
June 21-26 for rising 11th graders. The program gives students
the opportunity to experience real-life applications of math and
science principles through hands-on practical learning.

Unfinished business for Navy wrestler
3/3/2010:
To say Scott Steele has experienced a star-crossed college wrestling
career would be an understatement. The Naval Academy heavyweight
has accumulated a stellar 77-22 record and been ranked Top 10
nationally in two different seasons. The Towson native achieved
something few collegians ever have by being named as an
alternate to the United States Olympic team, an honor that
earned him a trip to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Games.

Academy duo
forms family fitness company
3/4/2010:
Two Naval Academy graduates and former USNA lacrosse teammates will be
offering a series of eight-week programs through their new
company, Turning Point Sports, aimed at having children exercise
with their parents. Both overcame obstacles and wanted to help
local families toward family fitness.

Midshipman sent to brig for theft
3/5/2010: A Naval Academy senior was
sentenced to a year in the brig yesterday after pleading guilty
to stealing testing equipment from an academy electrical
engineering lag and selling the items on eBay. Midshipmen 1st
Class Thomas J. Hayes of South glen Falls, New York, admitted to
sneaking a total of 12 pieces of equipment out of the lab in his
backpack. He was the third midshipman in less than a year to be
sentenced to prison for theft.

Patriot League
recognizes Van Orden for second year
3/6/2010:
Navy Senior
Mark Van Orden has been selected as the Patriot League
Men's Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year
for the second-straight winter. Van Orden is just the second
men's track athlete to have received the award and the ninth
Midshipman to be tabbed as the league's
top scholar-athlete of the year in their
respective sport twice in a career.

Highlights from March 6 WISNAPA meeting
3/7/2010:
Approximately 45 people attended the spring WISNAPA meeting
Saturday, held at the Milwaukee Yacht Club. Below are some of
the meeting highlights.

2010 All-Academies Military Ball - Plans are
underway for this year's ball on Thursday, Dec. 30.
Roger & Marion Christoph (Henry '13) generously offered to
chair the fundraising committee. Members are encouraged to help
by contacting area businesses for donations. A donation letter
and levels of giving card will be available soon. Chairs are
needed for music & entertainment, table decorations,
invitations/programs and gifts/door prizes. If interested in
helping with this worthwhile project, contact co-chairs
Mike & Chris De Villers.
Class of 2014 - State Admissions
Coordinator Craig Walker indicated there's been an increase in
applications for the Class of 2014, higher than post 9-11. To
date, there have been 183 applications with 5 accepted offers, 4
fully-qualified offers, 1 foundation and 2 NAPS offers.
Wisconsin has a minimum of 10 USNA appointments.
2010 Army-Navy game - A bank of 25
rooms are reserved at the
Holiday Inn - Historic District in Philadelphia. Room rates
have been slashed to $169/night (plus taxes and fees) from the
2009 rate of $185. Additional information will be provided at a
later date.
Future meetings - Meetings for
the 2010-2011 school year will be Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the
Country Springs Hotel, Waukesha; Saturday, October 9, 2010 in
the Milwaukee area & Saturday, March 5, 2010 in Oshkosh. A Class
of 2013 parent is needed to chair the Welcoming Committee for
the Class of 2014 for the June 5 meeting. If interested, contact

Warriors trade punches in championships
3/8/2010:
Several thousand hoarse voices raise the rafters of the old Halsey Field
House on a special night each year on the Annapolis campus of
the U.S. Naval Academy.
There's plenty of testosterone and warrior machismo in the air
as the midshipmen gather to watch their classmates battle it out
at the annual Brigade Boxing Championships. February's
fights marked the 69th time midshipmen faced each other in the
ring for the annual championships.

New USNA commandant of midshipmen announced
3/9/2010: Naval Academy Superintendent
Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler announced today that Navy Capt. Robert
E. Clark II, a USNA Class of 1984 graduate, has been selected to
be the 84th Commandant of Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy.
As commandant, Clark will be responsible for the military and
professional development of the approximately 4,400-member
Brigade of Midshipmen.

Naval Academy reports record applications
3/10/2010:
The U.S. Naval Academy is reporting a record number of applications, both
overall and in the number of minorities who have applied. Bruce
Latta, the dean of admissions, told the
academy's Board of Visitors on Monday that the school received
17,416 applications for the Class of 2014. He says that's 2,100 more than last year.

New policy authorizes social media access, with caveats
3/11/2010:
A new Defense Department policy authorizes access to Facebook, Twitter and
YouTube and other Web 2.0 platforms from nonclassified
government computers, as long as it
doesn't
compromise operational security or involve prohibited activities
or Web sites. Defense Department officials issued the
long-awaited policy Feb. 26, establishing consistent rules for
all military members and employers.

parades this spring. The parades will take place April 7,
April 23 and April 30. Each
parade will take place on Worden Field on the Naval Academy

3/16/2010: WISNAPA will be hosting the
All-Academies Military Ball on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010.
Approximately $18,000 will need to be raised for a successful
event. Members are encouraged to solicit local businesses,

Female USNA grads may soon be on subs
3/17/2010:
Some women in the Naval Academy Class of 2010, who will be commissioned in
late May, could be among the first female Navy officers to serve
aboard submarines, academy officials said Tuesday. In a major
change in policy, the Navy recently announced plans to lift the
ban on women serving on submarines, and Congress may give the
go-ahead by late next month, academy officials said.

Midshipmen engineers honored at dinner
3/18/2010:
Midshipmen and industry engineers gathered in Alumni Hall Feb. 25 for the
2010 Engineering Dinner, honoring graduating midshipmen with
engineering degrees. The night was hosted by members of the
Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), an organization
focused on promoting engineering support of national security
within the military, public and private sectors.

70) became the largest tourist attraction in Rio de Janeiro Feb.
28, when 80 midshipmen from the Brazilian Naval Academy toured
the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

Motorcycle safety is top priority at the Academy
3/21/2010:
Spring is just around the corner, and so is the motorcycle riding season.
Motorcycle rider training is required for all active duty
personnel who operate a motorcycle on or off base. Department of
Defense (DoD) civilians must also complete training if they
intend to ride a motorcycle on military installations.

Midshipmen
spend semester in Japan
3/22/2010:
During the fall 2009 semester, three midshipmen spent 16 weeks at the
National Defense Academy of Japan (NDA) in Yokosuka, Japan, as
exchange students through the Naval
Academy's
study abroad exchange program. Those 16 weeks were spent learning and
participating in the Japanese culture and language, as well as
experiencing and coming to understand the functions of the Japan
Self Defense Forces and cadets of NDA.

date set for Poinsettia Bowl
3/24/2010:
The 6th annual San Diego County
Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl will kick-off at 5 p.m. on
Thursday, December 23 at Qualcomm Stadium. The bowl game will
air on ESPN and match a team from the Mountain West Conference
against the bowl-eligible Naval Academy Midshipmen. The mids
need six wins to qualify for the game.

Naval Academy getting new galley
3/25/2010: After cooking 70,000 meals
a week for 40 years on the same equipment, the Naval Academy is
getting a new kitchen. The $41 million renovation will include
all-new equipment and a new 70,000-square-foot building, to be
built on the site of the existing galley. The renovation is
scheduled to be completed by December 2011.

Fall and spring meeting updates
3/26/2010: The October 9, 2010 WISNAPA
meeting will be in the Milwaukee area. The guest speaker will be
retired Rear
Admiral Ralph "Benny" Suggs, who began his
30-year naval career as a commissioned ensign through the Naval
Aviation Office Candidate Program in February 1970. He served a
wide variety of duties throughout his career including a pilot
and commander of a carrier group. Prior to his retirement
from active duty in February 2000, he served as the Deputy
Command-in-Chief, U.S. Special Operations Command.
The spring WISNAPA meeting has been moved to Saturday, March 12,
2011 (previously scheduled on March 5, 2011) and will be at the
EAA Museum in Oshkosh. The guest speaker will be Tim Feldhausen,
a '90 USNA graduate and former teacher at the Naval Academy. |

Navy kicks off
SARC Summit
3/27/2010:
The Department of Navy (DoN) kicked off the first Sexual Assault Response
Coordinator (SARC) Summit in New Orleans March 22. During the
summit, more than 200 representatives attended presentations,
training and open discussions, all designed to train responders
how to best care for victims and to encourage them to think
about sexual assault prevention in new and inventive ways.

The Naval
Academy's
annual Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) fund drive began
March 23, giving Annapolis Sailors and Marines the chance to
help their own. The NMCRS is a long-standing, nonprofit,
charitable organization that provides assistance to Sailors,
Marines and their families during times in need.

legend receives Naval Astronaut wings
3/30/2010:
A legendary astronaut and former Navy pilot received a pair of honorary
naval astronaut wings in a ceremony aboard
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower
(CVN 69) March 10 in recognition for his dedicated service to
the Navy and in the field of space exploration.
Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon July 20,
1969, was aboard
Eisenhower as part of the "Legends
of Aerospace"
tour sponsored by Morale Entertainment.
