40 years later, astronaut James Lovell marks his
ill-fated mission
4/1/2010: The commander, James Lovell,
of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission gathered with students from
the Chicago Public Schools' Air Force Academy High School to
kick off a month-long celebration honoring the 40th anniversary
of the infamous voyage. Lovell, who grew up in Milwaukee, was
initially rejected from the Naval Academy.

Naval Academy to present international ball
4/2/2010: The Naval Academy will
present the 44th annual International Ball on Saturday, April 10
at 8 p.m. in Alumni Hall. The formal event celebrates the
international midshipmen and officers at the academy and to
broaden exposure for the midshipmen. Currently 52 international
midshipmen and eight international officers represent 35
countries at the academy. The ball is a black tie event which
will feature exhibition dances by midshipmen, the Trident Brass
Midshipmen Jazz Ensemble and the Naval Academy Band's Electric
Brigade. The event is open to the public. Tickets are required
and can be
purchased online for $10 per person or at the door for $15
per person. |

Defense secretary to speak at Naval Academy
4/3/2010: Defense Secretary Robert
Gates will at the U.S. Naval Academy's Forrestal Lecture series
next week. Gates will review a formal dress parade Wednesday
afternoon before speaking at the private lecture to the
Brigade of Midshipmen in the evening. The Forrestal Lecture
Series was established in 1970 with prominent political,
athletic and military leaders, including former Secretary of
State Henry Kissinger, football coach Dick Vermeil and Supreme
Court Justice Antonin Scalia. |

Midshipman
received Gates Cambridge Scholarship
4/4/2010:
A Naval Academy midshipman was recently selected as a 2010 Gates Cambridge
Scholar from a pool of 800 U.S. applicants. The Gates Cambridge
Scholarship program was established in 2000 and funded by a $210
million donation to the University of Cambridge by the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation. It focuses on students with a strong
interest in social leadership and responsibility.

Women's
Glee Club performs in Brazil
4/6/2010:
Naval Academy midshipmen have many opportunities to travel
outside the U.S. during their four years in Annapolis, and in
recent years it has become traditional for musical groups such
as the Women's Glee Club to travel as official ambassadors to the academy during spring
break. This year, the organization traveled to South America,
visiting the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, Brazil.

MOH recipient
inspires NAPS students
4/7/2010:
A 1947 Naval Academy graduate and Medal of Honor (MOH) recipient who
nearly 60 years ago went to extraordinary measures to rescue a
downed fellow pilot during the Korean War, kept a Naval Academy
Prep School (NAPS) audience spellbound as he told his story.
Retired Capt. Thomas J. Hudner Jr., one of 91 living MOH
recipients nationwide, gave a motivational speech to the entire
battalion.

Academy training exercise concludes
4/9/2010: Heavily armed guards and
barricades around the Naval Academy have been part of a weeklong
training exercise that concluded April 7. The training runs may
have made the academy appear to be under siege, but officials
said they are part of a planned Navy-wide training exercise and
were not in response to any specific threat. The "Exercise Solid
Curtain-Citadel Shield 2010" is the largest anti-terrorism and
force protection exercise conducted nationwide. The city of
Annapolis aided in the exercise, which academy official said is
designed to "enhance the training and readiness of (the) Navy's
security personnel." |

Gates: Defy
authority when needed
4/10/2010:
Speaking at the Naval Academy April 7, Secretary of Defense Robert M.
Gates told the midshipmen there would come a time in their
careers when bucking authority will be necessary. He told the
4,400-member Brigade of Midshipmen that good leaders "create
a climate that encourages candor among subordinates." Gates,
speaking as part of the academy's Forrestal Lecture Series, related stories about military leaders who
bucked the brass in order to serve the nation.

Navy announces
plans to 'can'
paper leave chips
4/11/2010:
The Navy announced March 22 to begin phasing out traditional paper leave
chits, replacing them with a new electronic leave request
system. The new system, call Self-Service Electronic Leave
(E-Leave) is a Web-based program that Sailors can access through
their Electronic Service Record. E-Leave is projected to provide
significant savings in man-hours and processing time and serves
as a more convenient option.

2009 "Grad Ads" deadline
4/13/2009: Again this year, the summer issue of
Yardtales will feature "family salute" ads. A half
page will be reserved for each graduating Midshipman. Parents of
the Class of 2010 should submit photo(s) in JPEG or TIFF
formats, along with the wording of choice. A proof will be sent
for approval. It is optional and there will be no cost. The
deadline for submissions has been extended to
Monday, April 19.

Mids in YP
Squadron volunteer time in Baltimore
4/14/2010:
Through the efforts of the midshipmen of the Naval Academy Yard Patrol
(YP) Squadron, the World War II-era submarine
USS Torsk (SS 423), also known as "The
Galloping Ghost of the Japanese Coast," has made a comeback. Nearly 50 midshipmen
helped to refurbish the submarine, now part of the Baltimore
Maritime Museum, and get it ready to open to the public.

Johnnies take on Mids in 28th annual croquet match
4/15/2010: With midshipmen dressed in
starched whites and Johnnies donning whatever the muses suggest,
the Naval Academy and St. John's College will meet Saturday to
determine this year's winner of the Annapolis Cup - a collegiate
croquet match running nearly 30 years.

cyber security challenge

A
team of two Naval Academy midshipmen won
the Cyber Security Challenge II hosted by the National Defense
University (NDU) last month. Both are dual computer
science/information technology majors who will serve as surface

opened its doors to three midshipmen form the Republic of
Korea's Navy Academy April 4, giving them an experience that

The U.S. Naval Academy Men's Glee Club recently traveled to San Francisco where they spent their
spring break touring and performing in several concerts and
public events throughout the city and surrounding areas. The
Glee Club sang in many different performances throughout their
10-day visit, including several high schools, as part of
admissions outreach programs.

Former Navy
swimmer receives Bronze Medal
4/20/2010:
Former Navy swimming All-American Cmdr. Sara Salzstein was presented with
the Bronze Star Medal by Secretary of Defense Dr. Robert M.
Gates during his visit to the Naval Academy April 7. Saltzstein,
who currently serves as the Brigade Medical Officer and as the
officer representative for the
women's swimming team, received the citation for
her service at the U.S. Army’s Camp Clark in Khowst,
Afghanistan.

Midshipmen take part in ultramarathon
4/21/2010:
Three midshipmen competed together in the Arrowhead 135 Ultramarathon. The
Arrowhead Ultra Sports Foundation is a nonprofit organization of
local athletes dedicated to the promotion of human-powered
ultra-endurance events across the Arrowhead Region of northern
Minnesota.

way of the future, it is the war of right now, according to a
team of Naval Academy midshipmen immersed in a weeklong cyber

4/24/2010: Two Naval Academy
midshipmen have been selected as Truman Scholars for 2010. The
foundation announced that 60 students from 54 U.S. colleges and
universities were selected. The Truman Foundation, dedicated to
former President Harry S. Truman, finds and recognizes college
juniors with exceptional leadership potential and intellectual
ability who are committed to careers in public service.

Every year, the Department of Defense (DoD) and other organizations across
the country recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month
(SAAM), created to raise awareness and promote the prevention of
sexual violence in American. This annual event highlights the
efforts the DoD and individual military services are making to
combat sexual assault and promotes prevention thorough special
activities and public education.

Navy's streak of lacrosse losses to Johns Hopkins is
history
4/26/2010: Navy's losing streak to
Johns Hopkins had reached epic proportions and some wondered if
it would ever end. Attackman Andy Warner cemented his place in
program history when he scored the game-winning goal with 10
seconds left in overtime to lift Navy to a historic 9-8 victory
over 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins. Goalkeeper R.J. Wickham made a
great save in overtime as the Midshipmen snapped their 36-game
losing streak to the Blue Jays.

4/27/2010: Maryland's budget may be
balanced for the next fiscal year, but research for savings goes
on. State officials want to change the conditions of their
parking space lease at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium,
cutting the number of spaces.

U.S. Navy subs to ban smoking, may go coed
4/28/2010:
The U.S. Navy plans to ban smoking on its submarine force by year-end and
open the elite submarine fraternity to women next year. The
smoking ban, which goes into effect Dec. 31, will include
programs to help sailors kick the habit. Individual submarine
commanders will be allowed to decide if crew members are
permitted to smoke on the deck.

4/29/2010: A Navy pilot has been
named the next superintendent of the Naval Academy. If approved
by the U.S. Senate,
Rear Adm. Michael H. Miller will become the academy's 61st
superintendent. A 1974 academy graduate, he will be promoted to
the rank of vice admiral upon assuming the superintendent's
post. Miller will replace Vice Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler, a 1978
academy graduate who became superintendent on June 8, 2007.
