McNair Road closed to vehicle, pedestrian traffic
4/2/2011: The NSA Public Works
Department recently announced that starting April 1, McNair
Road, between College Creek and Alumni Hall, will be closed to
vehicle and pedestrian traffic as required to repair the bridge.
The Naval Academy Public Works Department anticipates the
project will be complete by Aug. 15.

12th mid expelled over 'spice'
4/3/2011: The Navy expelled a 12th
midshipman for smoking or peddling the marijuana-like drug
"spice" Monday as part of a wide-ranging investigation. The
former midshipman was a female sophomore, academy spokesman
Cmdr. Joe Carpenter said. She is the first woman to be expelled
for spice, according to Carpenter. Six other sophomores have
been kicked out, as well as four juniors and one freshman.

Naval Academy kicks off NMCRS fund drive
4/4/2011:
The Naval
Academy's
annual Navy Marine Corps Relief Society
fund drive began March 24, giving Annapolis sailors and Marines
the chance to help and support their own. The NMCRS is a
private, nonprofit , charitable organization that provides
assistance to sailors, Marines and their families during times
of need. The drive is led internally by active duty volunteers
stationed at the academy.

Naval officer returns to active duty on diamond
4/5/2011:
In the 156-year history of the U.S. Naval Academy,
it's never graduated a position player who made the Major
Leagues. Lt. Jonathan Johnston, however, is trying to break that
mold, even if he knows it won't be easy. Johnston, 26, is just getting back into the game after spending
the past four years on active duty with the Navy and being
deployed three times.

Naval Academy honors distinguished grads
4/6/2011:
Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael Miler and retired Adm.
Steve Abbot, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the U.S. Naval
Academy Alumni Association, honored four Naval Academy graduates
for lifelong achievement with the Naval Academy Alumni
Association Distinguished Graduate Award in a ceremony March 25.
Each recipient has demonstrated commitment to lifetime of
service and has made significant contributions to the Navy and
Marine Corps and the nation.

Navy starting linebacker leaves football team at academy
4/7/2011:
Starting outside linebacker Aaron McCauley, a junior who
finished third on the team with 82 total tackles, is no longer a
member of the Navy football team.

Naval Academy would be hampered by shutdown
4/8/2011: Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval
Academy will feel the impact of a government shutdown if a deal
cannot be reached Saturday, April 10, 2011 by midnight. The
Academy's civilians, who represent about 50 percent of the
school's faculty, would be furloughed if Congress cannot reach a
deal on the budget. The academy announced that the midshipmen
would continue to attend classes taught by military faculty but
students from classes taught by civilians would be assigned
"self study."

Navy athletic events cancelled with government shut down
4/9/2011: All athletic events (varsity
and club) at the Naval Academy will be canceled if the
government shuts down at midnight on Friday, April 9, 2011.
There will be no athletic competitions until the shutdown is

Where Blue Angels get their wings
4/10/2011:
The best Blue Angels show?
It's not in San Francisco or Annapolis. Rather it takes place in
a California desert town. Groupies who've seen the Blue Angels
perform so many times there swear they can tell when the U.S.
Navy's flight demonstration squadron is having
an off day.

Class of 2011 "Grad
Ads"
deadline
4/11/2011:
Again this year, the summer issue of
Yardtales will feature "family
salute" ads. A half
page will be reserved for each graduating midshipman. Parents of
the Class of 2011 should submit photo(s) in JPEG or TIFF
formats, along with the wording of choice. A proof will be sent
for approval. It is optional and there will be no cost. The
deadline for submissions is
Friday, April 15.

The Naval Academy Brigade of Midshipmen will present four formal dress
parades this spring. The parades will take place
April 13,
April 20, April 29 and May 23. Each
parade will take place on Worden Field on the Naval Academy
grounds. The public is invited without charge. |

Naval Academy expels 13th midshipman over spice
4/14/2011: The U.S. Naval Academy has
expelled another midshipman in an ongoing investigation into the
use or possession of synthetic marijuana. Cmdr. Joe Carpenter
said Wednesday that a male student was expelled last week. The
expulsion brings to 13 the total of midshipmen who have been
expelled as a result of the investigation which began last fall.

Mids train to prevent sexual assault
4/16/2011: Midshipmen from the Naval Academy are
taking the initiative to learn and participate in a program
aimed to minimize and prevent sexual assault. The program is
sponsored by One in Four, a national non-profit organization
dedicated to helping teach men how to prevent sexual assault by
the thoughtful application of theory and research to sexual
assault prevention programming.

Male mid charged with rape, awaits Article 32
4/17/2011:
A male Naval Academy midshipman has been charged with raping a female
midshipman in the
school's
dormitory, the first such charge in three years, an academy
spokesman said Thursday. Midshipman 4th Class Patrick Edmond,
19, of Jackson, Mississippi, was charged with sexual assault and
making a false statement after an investigation by Naval
Criminal Investigative Service. Academy superintendent Vice Adm.
Michael Miller, upon reviewing the NCIS report, referred the
charges to an Article 32 hearing, which will determine if there
is sufficient evidence for a general court-martial. The hearing
is scheduled to begin April 18.

Midshipman witnesses Japanese response to earthquake
4/18/2011: Midn. 1/C r. Adam Calloway
represented the Naval Academy at the 14th International Cadet
Conference March 2-10 at the National Defense Academy of Japan
during spring break. One of the largest earthquakes in recorded
history happened during his visit.

in Miami and San Diego, making the culmination of two semesters

Director of International Ethics Center lectures at USNA
4/20/2011:
The director of the Inamori International Center for Ethics and
Excellence at Case Western Reserve University spoke to Naval
Academy midshipmen, faculty and staff last month as part of the
Stutt Ethics Lecture Series, sponsored by the
academy's
Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership.
Shannon E. French taught ethics at the Naval Academy for 11
years as an associate professor of philosophy before accepting
the position at Case Western University.

Academy hosts ethics, leadership conference

The Naval Academy held its 11th annual McCain Conference on Ethics and
Military Leadership April 7-8. Sponsored by the
Academy's Vice Admiral Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, the conference
assembled experts to explore the state of warfare ethics, ten
years after the 9/11 attacks.

Mids meet with Organization of American States ambassador
4/22/2011:
The midshipmen of the Naval
Academy's Latin American Studies Club recently participated in a round table
discussion on Latin America with the U.S. ambassador to the
Organization of American States, an international organization
devoted to peace, security and development in Latin American
nations. The ambassador and her staff spoke candidly with the
midshipmen on controversial issues. Topics of discussion
included the inequality in Latin America, drug trafficking and
the effects of associated gangs and the Cuban embargo.

Mids hone cyber security skills
4/23/2011: A select group of Naval
Academy midshipmen completed a four-day competition Thursday
aimed at pitting their cyber security skills against teams from
the other service academies. The exercises, designed by the
National Security Agency, were intended to present the
real-world challenges involved in keeping a security system up
and working.

DOD launches new helpline to support victims of sexual assault
4/24/2011:
The Department of Defense launched its newest initiative to support
victims of sexual assault April 15. Using the DoD Safe Helpline,
service members can "click,
call or text"
for victim support services for themselves or others. The free,
anonymous and confidential resource can be accessed worldwide.

Croquet contest could be closer this year
Navy, St. John's gear up for
Annapolis rite of spring
4/25/2011: It's not typically the way
a team wants to head into competition. "We're going to win?"
Midshipman 1st Class Dan Abney, the Naval Academy's croquet team
caption sort of predicted about the upcoming 29th annual croquet
battle against St. John's College. His uncertainty is
understandable. In the past 28 years, the Mids have won only
five times against the Johnnies.

Navy concerned about synthetic marijuana
4/28/2011:
The U.S. Navy says
it's
concerned about widespread and increasing use of a synthetic
drug known as spice. Problems associated with spice include
hallucinations, paranoia and debilitating confusion, often
lasting for days, doctors say.

Trident Brass jams at jazz festival
4/29/2011:
The Naval Academy Brass jazz band performed at the 49th annual University
of Nevada Reno Jazz Festival April 7 in Reno, Nevada. The
festival featured jazz bands from all different levels,
including middle school, high school and college. Music ranged
from traditional big band to small-combo jazz.
