  USNA spring formal dress parades

4/1/08: The Naval Academy Brigade of Midshipmen will present formal dress parades on April 9 and April 25, both at 4 p.m. The parades will take place on Worden Field on the Naval Academy grounds. The public is invited to attend without charge.
 
 

Summer uniform change

4/2/08: Beginning April 7, summer uniforms will be worn by all Navy and Marine Corps personal. For Navy officers and CPO's, the uniform of the day will be summer whites and the alternate workday uniform will be service khakis. More information

 
  McCain credits lessons learned at Naval Academy

4/3/08: During a campaign visit to Maryland yesterday, likely Republican presidential nominee John McCain said too few Americans live up to their civic responsibilities and challenged them to do more to serve their country.

During his 15-minute speech, plagued by a balky prompting device that caused him to omit one page of his prepared remarks, McCain joked about his rebellious years a the Naval Academy, from which he graduated near the bottom of his class. Full story - Read speech - Watch video
 
  Naval Academy's first female commandant could be leaving

4/4/08:
The first woman commandant of midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy has been nominated for a promotion, meaning she could be leaving. Capt. Margaret Klein, commandant since 2006, has been nominated by the Department of Defense to become a rear admiral. Her current post is equivalent to the dean of students at a civilian school. Naval Academy International Ball

4/5/08: The Naval Academy will hold the 42nd annual Naval Academy International Ball Saturday, April 12 at 8 p.m. with opening ceremonies at Alumni Hall. The evening will honor international officers and Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. Tickets are required for all attendees. Midshipmen tickets are complimentary. The uniform is dinner dress whites or equivalent. Tickets for all others are $15 and available via the music and theater ticket office.

 
 

Academy band instrumental role in community outreach

4/6/08: On April 4, local high school musicians performed alongside members of the Naval Academy Band in their annual Side-by-Side concert in the Mitcher Auditorium in a free concert open to the public. The Naval Academy Band works closely with Anne Arundel County music educators to coordinate several community outreach events throughout the year like the Side-by-Side program. Full story

 
  USNA to play all five home football games at 3:30 p.m.

4/7/08: The Naval Academy Athletic Association and CBS College Sports Network announced Friday that all five Navy football games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium will kick off at 3:30 p.m. (EST). All five games will be televised live by CBS College Sports Network, with Mids appearing on national television 10 times in the 2008 season. Full story
 
 

115 years of deckplate leadership

4/8/08: April 1 marked the 115th anniversary of the establishment of the rank of Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy. To mark the occasion, Annapolis Chief Petty Officers and Gunnery Sergeants participated in a variety of events honoring the history and heritage of the Navy's senior enlisted leadership.   Bush presents Medal of Honor to SEAL's parents

4/9/08: The parents of Master-At-Arms 2nd Class (SEAL) Michael Monsoor, a 25-year-old SEAL machine-gunner killed when he dove on a grenade to honor his shipmates, accepted their son's posthumous Medal of Honor from a tearful President Bush at the White House.

Monsoor is the first SEAL to receive the Medal of Honor for service in Iraq. He is the fourth service member to receive the Medal of Honor for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  Judge to dismiss case against academy alumni association

4/10/08: A judge is expected to dismiss a lawsuit filed four months ago against the Naval Academy Alumni Association. The suit was brought by members who say the organization violated term limits when selecting officers. Full story
 
  Naval Academy hosts 2008 Special Olympics

4/11/08: The Naval Academy's Midshipman Action Group (MAG) will host the 2008 Special Olympics, which brings together Midshipmen, faculty and community members to participate in this event. Full story

 
 

New City Dock ready this week

4/12/08: The $9 million overhaul of City Dock, Annapolis' most prominent piece of maritime heritage, is scheduled to be completed this week on schedule and within budget. The first renovation of the dock in more than three decades included replacing about 1,000 feet of rotting bulkhead with steel, installing a new boardwalk, adding boat slips to accommodate larger vessels, building rain gardens to prevent runoff into Spa Creek and planting new landscaping at Susan Campbell B. The new face of Semper Fi Society

4/13/08: In February, 130 motivated Midshipmen braved the bitter cold of Greenbury Point to participate in a Filed Exercise (FEX) run by the Semper Fi Society. In support of the administration's intent to prepare Midshipmen for the Fleet, the Semper Fi Society organized Fleet-oriented activities calling on Midshipmen to challenge themselves with unfamiliar tasks. Superintendent makes visit to China

4/14/08: Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler led a delegation of senior Naval Academy officials on a visit to China last month. The team, including Commandant of Midshipmen, Rear Admiral (select) Margaret Klein and Academic Dean and provost Dr. William Miller, went to China to explore potential cooperative engagement opportunities for faculty and Midshipmen at the Dalian Naval Academy, a Chinese military academy.   Bush lauds Navy football team

4/15/08: President Bush lauded members of the Naval Academy football team yesterday for again earning the Commander-in-Chiefs Trophy, awarded yearly to the winner of the competition between the three major service academies.   PBS documentary to air reality-TV documentary

4/16/07: Beginning Sunday, April 27, PBS will air a reality-TV documentary entitled "Carrier," filmed while the production company was embarked during the entire USS Nimitz's 2005 deployment. The program will air over five nights from Sunday, April 27 to Thursday, May 1 from 9-11 p.m. EST. Ten hours of film will be aired, selected from almost 2,000 hours that were shot over the course of a six-month deployment.

The real story behind the Annapolis Cup competition

4/17/08: On Sunday thousands of people will gather on the lawn of St. John's College to watch one of the most popular croquet matches in the country - the annual battle for the Annapolis Cup between St. John's College and the Naval Academy. The mids will wear crisp white regulation dress of the U.S. Croquet Association. The Johnnies will unveil their super-secret uniforms only at the moment they arrive on the field. Full story

What if this happens to one of your sailors?

4/20/08: Last semester, 1/C Brian Geisen served as the Brigade Sexual Assault Victim Intervention (SAVI) Guide Coordinator. This role put him in a unique position to have a far-reaching impact not only on today's Brigade of Midshipmen, but on years of future Navy and Marine Corps leadership. In that role, Geisen had direct oversight of more than 50 Midshipmen involved in the Brigade's SAVI program. Full story

 
 

Navy introduces new PT uniforms

4/21/08: The Navy introduced its new physical training uniform (PTU) to the world, in a photo shoot last month. The PTU consists of a gold shirt with reflective Navy lettering and blue shorts with Navy lettering and reflective markings. The new uniforms will be required for all group and unit physical training (PT) in the Navy, as well as the semi-annual physical fitness tests. Full story

 
 

Academy takes wind out of sail program

4/22/08: Midshipmen will spend more time training in the fleet this summer and less tie sailing on the Severn, academy officials said. The change in emphasis reflects the policies of the academy's new superintendent, Vice Adm. Jeffry L. Fowler. Full story 

 
 

USNA Trident Scholars announced

4/23/08: The U.S. Naval Academy has selected 15 Trident Scholars for the Class of 2008. USNA instituted the Trident Scholar Program in 1963 to provide an opportunity for a limited number of exceptionally capable students to engage in independent study and research during their graduating year. Under this program, Midshipmen in the top 10 percent of their class are invited to submit proposed research projects and programs of study for evaluation.   Navy-Ohio State to play football in 2009 and 2014

4/24/08: Navy and Ohio State have agreed to play in football in 2009 and 2014. The Mids will open up the 2009 season on Sept. 5 in Columbus, while the Buckeyes will play Navy on Aug. 30, 2014 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium or at a neutral site in the Annapolis area.

  Wisconsin Mids run Salvation Army food drive

4/25/08: Nearly 400 Midshipmen were out of uniform as part of Team Bright Out, benefiting the Annapolis chapter of the Salvation Army last week at the Navy vs. Johns Hopkins lacrosse game. The idea for the special Midshipmen cheering section came from lacrosse fans to do something special for the local community. Midn. 2/C Erika Hubbard (Parents: Richard & Jackie Hubbard, Middleton) and
Midn. 2/C Sean Ublacker (Parents: Gregg & Bonnie Ublacker, Kaukauna) wanted to see the lacrosse team's losing streak come to an end, so they came up with the perfect solution. Full story
 
  College Roundup

4/26/08: The Naval Academy had 12 athletic teams publicly recognized by the NCAA for a high academic progress report recently. Navy's 12 teams tied with Duke for the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision (former 1A). Notre Dame was third with 11 teams.

Naval Academy athletic teams recognized by the NCAA include: baseball, men's basketball, football, men's gymnastics, men's lacrosse, men's tennis, men's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field, wrestling, rifle, women's basketball and women's crew.

  Minter held top two jobs at Naval Academy

4/27/08: The Naval Academy family is mourning the death of one of the only men to serve as both the commandant and superintendent of the institution. Vice Adm. Charles S. Minter, Jr., died at the age of 93. In 1961, he was appointed academy commandant. He spent four years at that post before rising to superintendent.

Johnnies notch 21st win over Navy

4/28/08: It was a wacky day in the annals of the already twisted history of the annual croquet match between rumpled St. John's College Johnnies and crisply-dressed Naval Academy midshipmen. The 26th annual Annapolis Cup match was won by a pair of students in sailor suits, but they weren't midshipmen. St. John's won 3 games to 2, during the final strokes of the match at 5:10 p.m. this is St. John's 21st victory. Full story

4/30/08: Each April, the Department of Defense (DoD) and other organizations across the nation observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). This annual event provides the opportunity to highlight efforts the DoD and individual military services are taking to combat sexual assault. Full story
