Plebes tested at Sea Trials
5/15/08: Since 1998, Sea Trials has
become a tradition at the Naval Academy. It's a 14-hour physical
and mental endurance test marking the culmination of a
Midshipmen's freshman, or Plebe, year.

Plebes' parents or sponsors. Before the annual, and slippery,
climb up the Herndon Monument today, the company that
demonstrated the top unit performance will be recognized with
the Iron Company award. The Iron Company will get a trophy, a
pennant to be displayed during formations and parades, and the

that belonged to his friend and fellow volleyball player Kristen
Dickman, a plebe who died unexpectedly last week.

Ring Dance a Naval Academy tradition since the 1920s
5/30/08: The Ring Dance celebrates the
night 2nd class midshipmen officially receive and "baptize" their
class rings in binnacles holding the waters of the seven seas: the
North Pacific, South Pacific, North Atlantic, South Atlantic,
Indian, Antarctic and Arctic, plus a splash of the Severn River. A
binnacle is a waist-high cylindrical case once used to hold a
compass on a ship. The midshipmen have been wearing class rings
since the 1870s and, prior to the ring dance, they christened them
by jumping into the Severn.
