Midshipman awarded for volunteer service

5/1/2011: Naval Academy Midshipmen 1st Class Christopher Memminger was recently named an honorable mention for the 2011 Governor's Volunteer Service Awards from the State of Maryland for his volunteer contributions and community involvement. Full story


St. John's continues to dominate Navy on the croquet field

5/2/2011: St. John's College has a proud tradition of regularly beating the U.S. Naval Academy for the coveted Annapolis Cut. Going into Saturday's 29th annual competition, the "Johnnies" had won 23 times, and every years since 2006. But No. 24 was far from the sure thing. Full story


Naval Academy students hail bin Laden's death

 

5/3/2011: The president's speech over, Osama bin Laden confirmed dead, jubilant midshipmen streamed out of their dorms Sunday night and into Tecumseh Court, one of the central gathering spots at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. Some shirtless, others dressed casually in T-shirts and baseball caps, the crowd grew into the thousands. Some smoked celebratory cigars. After midnight, an officer identified as the brigade commander told the crowd that it was the elite Navy SEALs who had killed the world's most-wanted terrorist, and they erupted in cheers. WISNAPA members invited to partake in discussion

5/5/2011: The Wisconsin Naval Academy Alumni Association will have a discussion about the recent action of the Navy SEALs bringing Osama bin Laden to justice. WISNAPA members are welcome to attend. If interested, the discussion will take place on Friday, May 6 at Champps Americana, 1240 S. Moorland Rd., Brookfield.


USNA on heightened alert

5/6/2011: The U.S. Naval Academy is currently in a heightened level of security readiness and awareness. Gate 3 is closed to vehicles until further notice. Pedestrian hours remain as schedules. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.


Gates to speak at academy graduation

5/7/2011: Defense Secretary Robert Gates will be the keynote speaker at the Naval Academy commissioning ceremony on May 27. Gates, 37, has served as defense secretary since late 2006, and is retiring on June 30. His comments likely will not be made public before they are delivered, but he may use the opportunity to look back on his career as one of the longest-serving defense secretaries in history. Graduating mids expect 'long haul' in war on terror

5/8/2011: With 23 days left to commissioning, members of the Naval Academy Class of 2011 said on Tuesday the killing of terrorist Osama bin Laden by Navy SEALs on Sunday has given them encouragement, but the war on terrorism is far from over. Full story


Interest in military academies remains strong

5/9/2011: Osama bin Laden has come and gone, but the number of young Americans willing to defend their country by enrolling in a military academy has remained constant during a decade marked by the terrorist strikes of 9/11 and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, two years ago, 85 percent of the accepted students enrolled the highest rate of any university in the nation. Full story

Army-Navy football tickets sold out

Many academy grads will serve in special forces

5/12/2011: Sunday's revelation of the dramatic death of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden emphasized the importance of America's military force just as Naval Academy officials prepare to graduate a diverse pool of military service men and women. Based on preliminary data, the Class of 2011 will graduate 1,008 officers - 743 in the Navy and 265 in the Marine Corps. Of these, a number will serve in special warfare, such as Navy SEALs who conducted the raid on bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. Full story

Mids design, build futuristic flight simulator

5/13/2011: A team of 18 Naval Academy midshipmen recently completed a year-long engineering design project in which the midshipmen designed and built a simulator of a futuristic aircraft cockpit potentially for use in the year 2035. The project was part of an inter-service academy competition sponsored and funded by the Boeing Company. The company asked each academy's team to design the cockpit that could control an aircraft similar in size to an F⁄A-18 as well as four unmanned aerial vehicles and one unmanned ground vehicle while conducting a typical air-to-ground and air-to-air strike mission. Nuclear treaty chief negotiator speaks to midshipmen

5/14/2011: The assistant secretary of the state for the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance visited the Naval Academy April 20 to speak to midshipmen, faculty and staff about the New START (Strategic Arms Reduction) Treaty and U.S. efforts to advance arms control and nuclear security goals. Mids design hybrid special forces vehicle

5/16/2011: A team of eight Naval Academy midshipmen won first place at the annual Service Academy Design Challenge held April 18-19 at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sponsored by the Air Force Research Lab at Kirkland, the competition challenges teams from the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Naval Academy each year to design a system that meets the requirements of a specified real-world scenario. Naval Academy paying tribute to commodore
New memorial requires removing painting of John Paul Jones' ship

5/17/2011: Commodore John Barry, a Revolutionary War hero and the United States Navy's first commissioned officer - and according to some, the "Father of the U.S. Navy" - is about to have a monument erected in his honor at the Naval Academy. The 8-foot tall, 6,500 pound bronze and granite monument will be erected just inside the Naval Academy gate on Prince George Street, at the end of Craig Street. Plans call for an arching bronze banner above the gate that will read "Barry." Full story

Academy plebes learn teamwork, self-confidence in Sea Trials

5/18/2011: For 14 hours Tuesday, starting at 3:30 a.m., the Naval Academy Class of 2014 sloshed in the mud and did push-ups, sit-ups and squats. The students practiced beach landings and land navigation, engaged in hand-to-hand combat, and ran. And ran. And they ran some more. In all, for Sea Trials 2011, the freshmen, or plebes, went through 32 stations, many of them aimed at simulating combat. Full Story - Photos

Eight Naval Academy athletic teams on 2011 NCAA APR honors list

5/19/2011: The Naval Academy ranks ninth in the country among all 120 football bowl subdivision institutions with eight of its athletics programs receiving 2011 Academic Progress Rate public recognition awards by the NCAA. Air Force had five programs honored, while West Point had one. The eight Navy teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The public recognition awards are part of the broad Division I academic reform effort. Full story

Three former USNA student-athletes are part of elite Blue Angels

5/20/2011: The eyes of thousands will be transfixed on the skies over the Naval Academy next week when the U.S. Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, returns to Annapolis for an appearance during Commissioning Week. While air show patrons are left to use their imagination and dream what it must be like to be part of the prestigious squadron, three current members of the blue Angels team are former Naval Academy student-athletes who live out that sense of wonderment daily. Speakers address midshipmen

5/22/2011: Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead addressed the Class of 2011 selectees May 18 in Alumni Hall. Roughead spoke to the mids about their futures as officers in the U.S. Navy. Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James F. Amos spoke to the midshipmen first class Marine Corps selectees in Mahan Hall May 17. Amos gave the mids words of encouragement and advice for their future in the Marines.


Midshipmen action group lends many hands

5/23/2011: To start this academic year, the Midshipman Action Group (MAG) distinguished itself with its first-ever September 11th Day of Commemoration and Service. They were involved in a Day of Service at the WWII memorial across the Severn River and at neighboring Jonas Green Park. In addition, MAG mids held a community moment of silence at the Memorial for all service members and civilians who lost their lives on September 11th. Full story


Blue Angels cancel Naval Academy air show

5/24/2011: The Navy abruptly canceled the Blue Angels practice and air show for this week. The Blue Angels are in Pensacola, Florida for extra training after a safety concern at an air show in Virginia over the weekend. Full story - Press release

'Plebes no more' as lard returns to USNA climb

5/25/2011: The lard was back Monday for first-year students at the U.S. Naval Academy who celebrate the end of their "plebe" year by creating a human pyramid to get a classmate to the top of a 21-foot obelisk. One student was taken to the hospital for treatment after participating. Full story - Watch video

Tradition links Naval Academy alumni and students

5/26/2011: As the 1,000 members of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 2014 spent hours trying to complete a generations-old tradition Monday afternoon - climbing up a 21-foot greased granite obelisk - several members of the Class of 1964 proudly watched. The two classes have a special bond. They are exactly 50 years apart, and each time the younger class celebrates a milestone in their four years on campus, the older class is there. Full story

Naval Academy launches 1,006 new grads into the world

5/28/2011: Before a crowd of 27,000, the Naval Academy Class of 2011 waited with anticipation Friday for commissioning ceremonies to begin at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Along with the granting of diplomas and military commissions, the high point of the ceremony was Secretary of Defense Robert Gates' keynote speech. Gates, who is retiring on June 30, has headed the Defense Department since December 2006  when these new ensigns and second lieutenants were in the middle of the application process. Gates offers leadership lessons to Naval Academy grads

5/29/2011: Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates delivered his last commencement speech as defense secretary Friday, calling on graduates at the U.S. Naval Academy to become the best leaders possible, setting the example and putting their people and organizations above their own interests. Gates thanks the 1,006 graduates assembled on the field at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium for choosing to serve their country and fellow citizens in uniform. Full story


Another link in the chain

5/30/2011: The Another Link in the Chain program forms bonds and relationships between current midshipmen and members of the 50-year class counterpart throughout the four years on the Yard and beyond. The midshipmen are buoyed and encouraged by the physical presence and moral support of the senior alumni, and members of the 50-year class counterpart enjoy working with the current midshipmen in their development of Navy and Marine officers. Parade has special meaning in Annapolis

5/31/2011: The traditional Annapolis Memorial Day parade was once again a success. Annapolis has a special connection with the military and with 30 units marching with pride, there were plenty of proud families. With the Naval Academy so entrenched in Annapolis, parents make sure their kids understand the sacrifice our soldiers make, because it's so important. Full story
