Mids eager to tackle all-too-brief down time

5/1/08: Some Naval Academy midshipmen talked about their pending graduation and commissioning on May 23, and spoke of what they want out of life. All the mids agreed they're glad to be serving not instead of in the 1970s, when some of their parents were in uniform. Full story

 
  Naval Academy commandant promoted

5/2/08:
Capt. Margaret D. Klein, who in 2006 became the first female commandant of midshipmen at the US Naval Academy, has been promoted to the rank of rear admiral. She has been assigned as operations officer on the Naval network warfare command. Full story

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to speak at academy graduation

5/3/08: Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will address the Naval Academy's graduation on May 23. Mullen has served as Joint Chiefs chairman since Oct. 1. A 1968 academy graduate, he most recently served as the 28th Chief of Naval Operations. Full Story

 
  Mids lead the way in New York City Parade

5/4/08: Members of the Naval Academy Pipes & Drums Band recently led the 10th annual New York City Week Parade.

  Naval Academy to dedicate field house

5/5/08: The Naval Academy will dedicate the Wesley Brown Field House at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The facility, which has been under construction since march 2006, will be a new center for physical education, varsity and intramural athletics, club sports and personal fitness.

The field house is named for retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Wesley Brown, who in 1949 became the first black graduate of the Naval Academy.

Mullen urges Academy Cadets to become leaders

5/6/08: The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told graduating cadets at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, that they will join an Army under severe stress, but one that is performing magnificently. Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, himself a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, spoke to the cadets May 2. He told them that they are well-prepared to join the force, and that they must become leaders once they are part of it. Full story

 
 

Volunteers sizzle up steaks for Midshipmen

5/7/08: As the rain came down, the tents went up. On April 2, more than 20 members of Cooks from the Valley, a volunteer group from Bakersfield, California, prepared 5,500 steaks for the Brigade of Midshipmen. Full story 

 
 

Herndon Climb to proceed

5/8/08: One of the Naval Academy's most popular spring traditions has survived attempts to scale it down. After saying that the annual Herndon Climb might involve few Plebes this year, the academy officials have determined that all members of the class will participate. Full story

 
  Deceased Mid remembered for big smile, love of math

5/9/08: A Naval Academy freshman who was known for inspiring others died on Monday, but she will be an inspiration for her classmates as they complete the final days of their Plebe year. Plans are in the works to use Midshipman 4th Class Kristen Dickman's Plebe hat for next week's Herndon Monument Climb, her mother said.

Semper Fi Society helps Mids prepare for Leatherneck

5/10/08: The Semper Fi Society hosted a Field Exercise (FEX) for more than 120 Midshipmen last month, designed to help prepare Midshipmen who are interested in attending Leatherneck, a four-week officer candidate course at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. Nearly half of the Midshipmen who participated in the FEX will attend Leatherneck this summer. Full story

 
  Naval Academy unveils $52 million field house

5/11/08: The Naval Academy showed off its brand new field house this week, a $52 million field house that was dedicated Saturday morning and named for the first African American to graduate from school, retired Lt. Cmdr. Wesley A. Brown. Full story
 
  Academy Model United Nations team competes in NYC Conference

5/12/08: From April 22-26, 10 Midshipmen from the Naval Academy's Model United Nations (UN) club traveled to New York city to participate in the annual National Model United Nations conference.

  Storm wallops county

5/13/18: Heavy rain drenched an already saturated county with flooding roads and sweeping away vehicles. The Naval Academy has been hit with 1.92 inches of rain since Sunday afternoon. BWI was 1.75 inches. Wind gusts at the Naval Academy reached 26 mph between 2 and 3 a.m. on Monday. Since the rain began Thursday, the airport has seen more than 6 inches of rain.

  Naval Academy names new commandant of midshipmen

5/14/08: Capt. Matthew Klunder (USNA '82) will replace Capt. Margaret Klein as the academy's new Commandant of Midshipmen in June. He will be responsible for training, disciplining and morally development.

  Plebes tested at Sea Trials

5/15/08: Since 1998, Sea Trials has become a tradition at the Naval Academy. It's a 14-hour physical and mental endurance test marking the culmination of a Midshipmen's freshman, or Plebe, year.

In a change from previous years, the Sea Trials were not open to Plebes' parents or sponsors. Before the annual, and slippery, climb up the Herndon Monument today, the company that demonstrated the top unit performance will be recognized with the Iron Company award. The Iron Company will get a trophy, a pennant to be displayed during formations and parades, and the first crack at climbing Herndon.

5/16/08: A wiry volleyball player from Pennsylvania had the honor yesterday morning of scaling the Herndon Monument, signaling the end of the freshman or "plebe" year for the Naval Academy Class of 2011. Midn. 4/C Greg Reichel removed the plebe dixie cup and replaced it with a midshipman's cover after 2 hours, 35 minutes and 59 seconds of messy attempts by the plebes.

When he ascended to the top, Midn. Reichel removed the dixie cup that belonged to his friend and fellow volleyball player Kristen Dickman, a plebe who died unexpectedly last week. Full story - Watch video
 
  Beads for the troops

5/17/08: Over the past four years, Midshipmen in the Naval Academy Class of 2008 have been given the academic and professional training they need to become commissioned officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. On Sunday, some of them will receive one more tool to help them serve their country in wartime: a combat-ready rosary.

Midshipmen experience shipboard life

5/18/08: USS Theodore Roosevelt (CNV 71) received 24 Midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy on May 9. These future naval leaders will call the Theodore Roosevelt home until May 23. The Midshipmen arrived in two distinct groups, first class and third class Midshipmen. Both groups have their own missions. Full story

  WISNAPA summer meeting RSVP

5/20/08: The WISNAPA June 7, 2008 RSVP at the
Charcoal Grill & Rotisserie in New Berlin was mailed last Friday. The cost of the meal is $17 per person (the Class of 2012 and Mids are our guests).

After lunch, two panels will convene, one for parents and another for the incoming Plebes to meet with current Mids/grads. Come prepared to ask questions. At the conclusion of the meeting, WISNAPA officers will be inducted.

  New design - available January 2007Military license plates

5/21/08:
The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles offers military license plates per Gregg Ublacker (Sean '09). Eligibility includes military academy students or alumni. The designated military seals will go on the left side of the plate. The corresponding words go at the bottom of the plate, including the US Naval Academy. More information - Application Form
 
  Service academy graduations On Demand

5/22/08: Friends and family members unable to attend the service academy graduation ceremonies can now watch the commencements On Demand as offered by Comcast and the Pentagon Channel. Digital cable customers throughout New Jersey, Delaware, southeastern and central Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. are eligible via Comcast's local On Demand service.

  WISNAPA membership

5/23/08: WISNAPA is accepting membership applications for the 2008-2009 academic year. Regular memberships (families of current Midshipmen) is $30 ($15 for split households), and associate memberships (families of graduates, sponsor parents or Foundation members) are $15.

There are a variety of reasons to join/continue WISNAPA membership including three luncheons a year with guest speakers, care packages for Midshipmen and deployed graduates, graduation gifts for Firsties, Army/Navy game hotel rooms/game section/tailgate, a web site that is updated daily, sponsor families, handbooks for incoming plebes and parents, parent support and more.

  Mullen to grads: Question leadership

5/24/08: The military's top officer told members of the Naval Academy's Class of 2008 that they should not be afraid to question authority and that they should be prepared to leave the service if they feel they cannot carryout orders. Mullen said officers - even ensigns and second lieutenants - have an obligation to speak up when they think things aren't going well and to ask tough questions of their superiors when those questions are required.

  Fleet Week New York City logo.

Fleet Week NYC 2008

5/25/08: Thousands of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard ships are in New York during Fleet Week May 21-28. Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week New York is the city's celebration of the sea services. More information

 
  Lowe's, Home Depot offering discounts

5/26/08: Two national home-improvement retail chains are again offering a 10 percent in-store Memorial Day discount to active-duty personnel, reservists, retirees and honorably discharged veterans and their immediate families.

  Class of 2008 majors

5/27/08: The breakdown for the Class of 2008 majors are shown below. The  numbers will not add to the exact number of graduates (1,037) due to double majors and cross-over commissions. Graduates included 823 males and 214 females, 785 will be part of the Navy, 233 USMC and 16 foreign. Ethnic breakdowns include 93 Hispanics, 51 African Americans, 49 Asian-Americans and 17 Native Americans.

5/28/08: Thousands of spectators crowded both shores of the Severn River last Wednesday to watch in awe the annual Naval Academy Commissioning Week air show by the Blue Angels. Full story

 
 
 

USNA Chapel Centennial celebration

5/29/08: The cornerstone of the USNA Chapel was laid in June 1904; the first service of worship was held on May 24, 1908. Between May 1904 and May 1908, thousands of Midshipmen have worshiped at the chapel with faculty, staff, families and friends. A rededication service was held on Wednesday, May 28. 

 
  Ring Dance a Naval Academy tradition since the 1920s

5/30/08: The Ring Dance celebrates the night 2nd class midshipmen officially receive and "baptize" their class rings in binnacles holding the waters of the seven seas: the North Pacific, South Pacific, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, Indian, Antarctic and Arctic, plus a splash of the Severn River. A binnacle is a waist-high cylindrical case once used to hold a compass on a ship. The midshipmen have been wearing class rings since the 1870s and, prior to the ring dance, they christened them by jumping into the Severn.

Academy grads play key roles for Blue Angels

5/31/08: Lt. Frank Weisser, a 2000 Naval Academy graduate and pilot No. 7 on the Blue Angles flight team, has been assigned to the Blue Angels for a year. He travels ahead of the rest of the team to coordinate with law enforcement, Federal Aviation Administration personnel and ground crews. Full story
