military helicopter during fighting in eastern Afghanistan,
killing 30 Americans, most of them belonging to the same elite
unit as the Navy SEALs who killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin
Laden, U.S. officials said Saturday. It was the deadliest single
loss for American forces in the decade-old war against the
Taliban. None of the 22 Naval Special Warfare personnel killed
in the crash were part of the team that killed bin Laden in a
May raid in Pakistand, but they belonged to the same unit.

Naval Academy makes Forbes' top 100 list
8/8/2011:
Fobes magazine has
ranked the U.S. Naval Academy among its top 100 in America. The
annual
ranking of the 650 best undergraduate institutions is based
on teaching quality, student career prospects, graduation rates
and student debt levels - important criteria to students,
according to the magazine.
Because of an emphasis on financial prudence, the zero-cost
military service academies rank highly.
West Point, which topped the list two years ago, ranks third
this time, thanks to outstanding teaching (#3) and high alumni
salaries (#8), while the
Air Force Academy (#10) and the
Naval Academy (#17) glide easily into the top 20. Even the
less prestigious academies - the
Coast Guard (#97) and the
Merchant Marine (#158) - score well.

USNA family and friends connect with Class of 2015
8/12/2011:
To get through the physical and mental demands of Plebe Summer, plebes
have to rely on more than their own personal strength and the
support and teamwork of their fellow midshipmen. They also
depend on support and encouragement from their family and
friends back home. One plebe mother decided to take this a step
further to encourage families to send care packages for those
midshipmen who might not have a firm support structure at home.

Another Dobbs tries to make his name at Navy
8/23/2011:
The natural instinct is to think that former star quarterback Ricky Dobbs
is the reason sophomore defensive end Jamel Dobbs is playing
football at Navy, given that they are distant cousins who grew
up near each other in the suburbs of Atlanta. Truth is, Jamel
Dobbs never met his famous namesake until he showed up on his
recruiting visit two years ago. Jamel Dobbs quickly found common
ground with Ricky Dobbs in the way they balanced their love of
football with a strong religious faith. Now Jamel Dobbs is on
the verge of following his newfound cousin by starting for the
Midshipmen as a sophomore when Navy opens its season on Sept. 3
against Delaware.

5.8 magnitude earthquakes hits Anne Arundel County
8/24/2011: A magnitude 2.8 earthquake
rocked the county around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, forcing the
evacuation of schools, offices, courthouses and other buildings.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was half a mile
deep and centered near Louisa, Virginia, about 40 miles
northwest of Richmond. Shaking was felt all over the East Coast
- as far south as Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and as far north
as Connecticut. In Washington, parts of the Pentagon, White

Atheists groups find doors open to them at service
academies

parity with religious groups throughout much of U.S. military,
they pint to the service academies as one setting where they're
achieving their aims. At the U.S. Naval Academy's July religious
assembly for incoming plebes, 45 members of the Class of 2015 -
about 4 percent - signed up with the Naval Academy Agnostics,
Freethinkers and Atheists groups, or NAAFA. Organizers say
similar numbers of students joined atheist groups at the Air
Force Academy and at West Point.

Annapolis prepares for Hurricane Irene
8/27/2011: Annapolis is under a
tropical storm warning, meaning tropical storm conditions will
likely develop. Hurricane Irene is currently a category 2 storm,
but could strengthen to a category 3. It is likely to lose some
strength after hitting North Carolina. The worst weather will be
from 8 p.m. Saturday until late morning Sunday with local
rainfall of 6 inches or more and strong winds.
Per the USNA
Facebook page, actions were taken to prepare for Hurricane
Irene including disseminating information to ensure all
midshipmen, faculty and staff remain safe and are prepared for
potentially heavy weather, the clearing of drains, deployment of
door dams and sandbags around buildings, relocating sensitive
equipment to higher ground, moving Yard Patrol craft and
sailboats to hurricane moorings in Baltimore and up the Severn
River, and relocating automobiles from the seawall to safer
areas. Naval Academy leadership will continuously monitor the
situation and adjust their level of readiness based on what the
storm does.

How do the academies measure up?
8/29/2011:
The Naval and Coast Guard
academies - as you might expect - aren't the first colleges to
consider when
you're looking for a party school. But, alongside ranking high
as a "stone-cold
sober" school in this year's
Princeton
Review rankings,
the two academies got high marks for accessible professors, low
marijuana use and "running
like butter," meaning administration works well. On the
not-so-good end, the Naval Academy ranked 7th for "least
happy students" of the 376 U.S. schools included in this year's
rankings and 14th for "dorms like dungeons."
