Midshipmen storm chasers fly into hurricane
9/4/2011:
When Naval Academy Midshipman 1st Class Ian Park flew into the heart of
Hurricane Irene, it was like being tucked inside a blanket of
clouds. Sounds like of cozy, but it was a bumpy ride - and he
and classmate Elliot Hoy were extremely busy gathering data. The
midshipmen were safe, however, because they were aboard a
specially equipped plane flown by specially trained pilots.

Navy game brings together mids, 60-year alumni
9/6/2011:
It's a tailgate arrangement for
the ages. Beneath one of the dozens of blue and gold tents at
Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday, a small group of
Naval Academy alumni from more than 60 years ago gathered before
heading into the football game. For about a decade, the 29th
Company and the Class of 1950 have had an agreement: The mids
can use the alumni
group's tent and tailgating space if
they do all the work setting up and cleaning up.

USNA football player taking hiatus to work in Africa
9/8/2011:
Kicking a soccer ball with a group of Kenyan orphans is an experience that
has stuck with Justin Haan while
he's punted for two winning seasons on the U.S. Naval Academy's
football team. Since his time spent in the
East African country building huts and working at a
Kimilili-based orphanage in 2009, Africa has been in the back of
his mind, he said, along with the unshakable feeling he should
go back to make a long-term difference. So, instead of returning
as a starting punter this fall, Haan, 21, is taking a hiatus
from the academy to work with Grand Rapids-based Set Free
Ministries as special project coordinator in the East African
division.

Sept. 11 changed destiny for Navy class of 2002
9/10/2011: Coutney Senini knew
something was amiss when aides started dashing in and out of the
classroom, passing messages to the admirals and generals who
taught her leadership seminar at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Finally, one of the aides stood before the room of seniors and
in a big, puffy voice, said the words that would change their
lives: "Ladies and gentlemen, the United States is under
attack." The room fell silent.

Army-Navy game players carry lessons from gridiron to battlefield
9/13/2011:
It was a calm Tuesday morning. Summer had just about seeped into fall. The
financial markets were relatively stable. The United States, as
it had been for the better part of nearly three decades, was at
peace. Then, at 8:46 a.m., a plane hit the North Tower of the
World Trade Center in New York City, followed less than 20
minutes later by another hijacked airliner that plowed into the
South Tower. A third plane smacked into the Pentagon in
Washington, D. C., and a fourth was headed for either the White
House of the Capitol. After passengers subdued the hijackers of
the United airlines Flight 93, it crashed in a Pennsylvania
field. By the end of the day, nearly 3,000 Americans were dead.
For the cadets and midshipmen at West Point and Annapolis, the
prospect of fighting in a war had suddenly turned from
theoretical to very real. For the academies'
football teams, the event of September 11,
and their aftermath, made for one of the more remarkable seasons
in college football history, as well as for the dramatically
memorable Army-Navy game. Players from both teams endured
experiences that they would carry with them to Afghanistan, Iraq
and beyond.
This is their story.

Joint Chiefs chairman Mullen addresses midshipmen
9/23/2011: Only days before
retirement, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, told the Naval Academy's midshipmen that one of the most
important things they can learn is to overcome their failures.
"It isn't that you fail, it's how you get up," Mullen said.
Wednesday night's address was Mullen's farewell to the academy,
from which he graduated in 1968. At the end, he did something no
one in recent memory has done - he stepped down from the stage
and shook hands with each of the 4,500 mids who came by, and
gave each a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff coin.

academy's Gate 3 near the western side of The Yard was closed for renovation.
Traffic from both the academy and tourists began to drop off,

9/26/2011:
The Naval Academy Brigade of Midshipmen is an organization that operates
as a cohesive, self-sufficient entity within the academy. While
there is oversight from the commandant and his staff, the first

providing them with valuable leadership prior to being
commissioned. The term "striper" refers to a first class midshipmen in a leadership position within the
brigade who wears gold bars (stripes) as collar devices. These
devices indicate their level of responsibility, with more bars

For the past 10 years, the answer has always been the same with regard to
the question of conference affiliation for the Navy football

terms of scheduling, bowl affiliations and television contracts.
That may not still be the case five years from now as the
landscape of college football is changing dramatically due to

Finding leaders who can set the right example for midshipmen in both
academic performance and real world experience can be difficult,
but this
semester's most senior midshipman is no stranger to
challenges. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Midshipman 1st
Class Jonathan Monti was barely an average student through high
school He struggled through his freshman year in college and,
after failing to balance his academics with a part-time
construction job with his dad, he decided to quit both. He
enlisted in the Marine Corps as a different avenue to better his
life and turned his deficiencies into strengths, which rekindled
his passion for engineering.
