Mids'
new rules will change city
9/7/07:
Walk into Armadillos Restaurant in Annapolis on an average
Tuesday night, and you might think
you've
stumbled into a particularly raucous Naval Academy classroom - or
scene from Top Gun.
With new rules that will keep Midshipmen from going out on
weeknights, that scene at the downtown Annapolis bar will become
a thing of the past. In theory, mandatory study time will mean
the Mids will have their noses in books instead of beer mugs and
shot glasses.

Letter from Commandant re: food service
Baltimore Sun photo
.jpg)
9/8/07: Capt. Margaret Klein, Commandant of
Midshipmen, recently wrote a letter to parents in response to
concerns about food service. An initial priority was to
reinstitute the practice of Midshipmen regularly eating meals
together in King Hall. The focus was to better align the Naval
Academy with the Fleet, where Midshipmen will soon serve as
leaders.
The added increase of
consumption left some Midshipmen with inadequate amounts of
food. This was unacceptable and it became a priority to ensure
the food distribution was quickly resolved. On a related note, a
new menu was developed to reflect the goal of providing
Midshipmen with the proper diet to support both academic and
athletic goals and to educate and expose Mids to foods that are
part of a health, well-balanced lifestyle.

Academy leaders focused on
'moral, mental, physical
development'
9/15/07:
Of all the changes taking hold over the past few weeks at the
Naval Academy, the least popular, at least among Midshipmen,
might come as a surprise.
According to several dozen Midshipmen and parents, the most
intolerable transition brought about by new leaders Vice Adm.
Jeffrey Fowler and Capt. Margaret Klein has been a side effect
of the three-hour mandatory study time: Workouts are being
squeezed out.

Mids learn seamanship skills in Academy's
"real
life" simulators
9/19/07:
The
ship's
bow plows through the water. Its speed slows as it overtakes
pleasure craft. Watch standers on the bridge study the coastline
and the buildings on the horizon, signaling the ship’s approach
to a major port. But although the ship appears to be moving and
the scenery appears to be changing, the ship
isn't
really a ship.

Class of 2009 class ring
9/25/07: The USNA Class of 2009 Class Crest, designed
by 30 members of the class, represents more than a year of
teamwork in formulating and finalizing the various elements
incorporated within the crest. Each element is symbolic of a
larger ideal which the members of the class strive to embody.
The idea of designing a ring to represent service academies,
colleges and high schools appears to have originated at West
Point in 1835, with the Class of 1836. The tradition extended to
the Naval Academy in the 1870s, and the Class of 1959
established it for the Air Force.

incorporate Midshipmen into the teaching process, because peers
have been found to communicate better with people their own age
on the subject.

Prank battle takes off as Midshipmen retaliate
9/29/07: As Air
Force and Navy prepare for their annual football match today,
their rivalry has been playing out all week in another
tradition: the battle of the pranks.
This year, Midshipmen
painted a giant "C" and "H" before the "AIR FORCE" that lines
the top bleacher level at Falcon Stadium. the Air Force
sometimes is jokingly call the "Chair Force" by members of other
service branches, a jibe implying that airmen spend much of
their time in seats.
