De Vuono garners Patriot League award

First Class Midshipman Doug De Vuono, Racine, Wisconsin,
was selected as the Patriot League
men's soccer Player of the Week. It marks the first time a Navy player
has won the title since October 6, 2003.

One of the most popular events at the Naval Academy is the
annual Halloween and All Saints Day Organ Concert. Tickets go on
sale today at 9 a.m. (EST) for the October 27 performances at 7
p.m. and 9:30 p.m. for $20.

Naval Academy at the head of the class
for graduation rates
10/5/07: For the third year in a row, the Unites
States Naval Academy is at the head of the class for graduating
NCAA student-athletes on the Division 1A level. Navy graduated
100 percent of its student athletes in 12 of the 19 sports
reported on and no sport graduated lower than 94 percent.

More women than ever enter West Point

The Class of 2011 at West Point has 225 young women, which is
the highest number of female cadets in a single class since
women first came to the U.S. Military Academy in 1976 and the
highest proportion for any class: 17 percent.

Language Studies Department presented a weeklong Chinese Film
Festival October 1-5. The
festival's
focus was on promoting an understanding of Chinese culture and

to publicize the new Chinese major at USNA.

Fowler: Military mission academy's
first priority
10/9/07:
Naval Academy Midshipmen will spend more time with sailors in
the fleet and have less time for extracurricular activities such
as music programs and sailing, the school's new superintendent
said last week. He added that less time will be spent on
worthwhile Midshipmen activities, such as building homes fro
Habitat for Humanity, to make time for training.

Team Tecumseh paints the way
10/10/07:
For as far back as most people on the Yard can remember, members
of the 9th Company, known as Team Tecumseh, have
transformed the statue with paint and props. Sometimes the theme
is controversial,
while other times it is family-friendly, but it is always well
thought out.

Navy returns 1871 battle flag to South
Korea 10/11/07:
The Naval Academy has agreed to return a captured 1871
battle flag to South Korea after a cultural delegation from the
U.S. ally visited Annapolis earlier this year and asked school
officials to give it back.

Navy's football season tickets
sales strong
10/12/07:
Navy's
22,634 football season tickets sold are the most in the country
for schools with a total enrollment of 10,000 or less. Navy sold
5,000 more season tickets than the next closest school, Wake
Forest, which sold 17,000 season tickets. Navy is second to
Boston College (30,945) for schools with undergraduate
enrollment of 10,000 or less.

continental congress voted to commission a swift sailing vessel
with ten carriage guns and an appropriate number of swivels, the
United State Navy now reigns supreme as the most powerful Navy

The U.S. Navy will unveil a new maritime strategy in October
that will address the demands of a globalizing world. The
document, which took some 16 months to complete, is the
Navy's first attempt to document a seapower strategy since the 1980s.

Fundraising request for All Academies
Military Ball
10/20/07: WISNAPA is hosting the All Academies
Military Ball on December 28, 2007. In order to make this year's
ball a success, each WISNAPA family is being asked to raise $250
for the ball's fundraising efforts.
Sample letters requesting donations are available. If you're
not sure who to solicit, consider employers, unions, churches,
doctors, dentists, local grocers, banks, VFW posts, American
Legion, local businesses and organizations, etc.
Again, Tom and
Sue Mahoney have graciously
accepted to spearhead fundraising efforts. In order to
coordinate funds, please E-mail either Tom or Sue with the names
of companies you are contacting. If you feel uncomfortable
contacting a specific company, forward the information to the
Mahoneys or call them at 1-920-465-9826.
Gerianne and Jeff Prom,
co-chairs of the year's ball, will be handing out fundraising
packets and providing additional information at the WISNAPA

Fall WISNAPA meeting highlights
10/21/07:
Approximately 45 members attended the fall
meeting at the Milwaukee Yacht Club.
501(c)3 status: Maureen Fitzsimmons Vanden Heuvel has
completed the 501(c)3 information and will be mailing the forms
on Monday. If approved by the IRS, all donations will be tax
deductible as of the filing date of November 3, 2006. Approval
or non approval should take approximately four months. This
information can be used when requesting donations for the All
Academies Military Ball this December.
Army/Navy game: If you want to stay at the Holiday Inn
BWI Airport during the Army/Navy game,
make your reservations
by November 1 to secure the $79 discounted room rate.
After November 1, the rates will increase dramatically. WISNAPA
will host a tailgate after the football game at the hotel.
Once your Army/Navy tickets arrive,
E-mail John Kelling
with your seat numbers and where you will be staying. If you
encounter flight problems due to weather problems, please call
John's
cell phone.

Navy SEAL to be awarded Medal of Honor
10/22/07:
Lt. Michael P. Murphy will be presented the U.S. Navy Medal of
Honor, awarded posthumously, during a ceremony at the White
House today. The Medal of Honor is the
nation's highest military award for valor in action against the enemy force
which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed
Services.

Study group develops peer leadership skills
10/23/07:
The Naval Academy curriculum can present challenges to
academically overwhelmed Midshipmen during their four-year stay.
However, the Midshipmen Group Study Program (MGSP) is one of
many resources available to help struggling students.
For almost 15 years, the MGSP provided academic support for
Midshipmen, by Midshipmen. A team of 61 faculty members works
with 61 group leaders to provide additional tutoring assistance
in a variety of subjects from chemistry, calculus, physics,
navigation and more.

The adage

show must go on" has seldom reflected more tenacity, discipline, determination and
passion than it does this season, with the unbroken 100-year
history of theatrical productions at the Naval Academy. The
Masqueraders will mark the
troupe's
centennial next month with two weekend presentations of
Our Country's Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker, despite new academy regulations that cut

free time for extracurricular activities.

Naval Academy to dedicate Brigade
Sports Complex
10/25/07: The$16.5 million privately funded
Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex will
be officially dedicated by the United States Naval Academy and
the Naval Academy Athletic Association on Saturday, Oct. 27. The
new complex provides a combined venue for hockey, tennis golf
and rugby competition.

Midshipmen learn lessons from the Fleet

Nearly 40 Midshipmen attended a leadership forum with the
commanding officer (CO) of USS Mahan (DDG 72) at the U.S.
Naval Academy Oct. 19.
Mahan was visiting Annapolis for the
Academy's
homecoming weekend. Cmdr. Rick Miller, the
ship's
CO, is a 1989 Naval Academy graduate and spoke to the Navy and
Marine
Corps'
future officers about what the fleet expects from the newest
members of the wardroom.

Award winning chemist speaks of architecture in nanospace
10/27/07:
As the Naval Academy invited Sir Harold W. Kroto, a 1996 Nobel
laureate winning chemist, to speak at the academy as part of the
27th annual Michewlson Memorial Symposium. The
symposium honors the late Dr. Albert A. Michelson, a 1907 Nobel
Prize winning physicist, who taught physics at the academy
between 1875 and 1879.

10/29/07:
The U.S. Naval Academy and a team of academic consultants
recently developed and implemented a comprehensive
peer-education program designed to address issues surrounding
sexual harassment and assault. The program, known as Sexual
Harassment and Assault Prevention Education (SHAPE), uses
Midshipmen as peer-facilities to engage and educate the Brigade
on topics ranging from consent to rape survivor recovery.
