Throwing candy at mids remains a sticky issue
10/18/2009: When it comes to making a
mess, few things in Annapolis compare to the slop created by
admiring crowds that throw candy at the Brigade of Midshipmen as
they march to home football games. The practice of throwing
candy at the midshipmen took a hiatus after the
The Capital newspaper in October 2006 asked the Naval
Academy about the practice. The academy's then-superintendent
responded by asking fans not to toss candy at the mids, for fear
of hitting one in the eye and ending an otherwise promising
career.

Naval
Academy Chapel restoration complete
10/25/2009: The nearly $4 million Naval
Academy Chapel restoration project included restoring plaster
moldings and decorations that had deteriorated over the years
because of time and moisture, and returning the paint scheme to
the subdued off-white shades that architect Ernest Flagg, who
originally designed the chapel more than a century ago,
envisioned. Restoration included uncovering the 20-foot diameter
oculus, or round skylight, located in the dome. The skylight,
situated 121 feet above the chapel floor, has

Academy falls short of sub volunteers
10/26/2009: Too few Naval Academy
seniors opted to become nuclear-qualified submarine officers
this fall, so the school's administration has asked more
students to make that their career path and, if necessary, will
force them. In a message to the Brigade of midshipmen last
Tuesday, the academy's director of professional development,
Capt. Stephen Evans, wrote that the academy this year was
required to send 125 officers into the nuclear submarine
training pipeline, but that only 92 had been accepted by Naval
Reactors. That meant 33 midshipmen would be asked to volunteer
or told to become sub nukes.
