Renowned professor to speak at academy
10/1/2011:
Renowned historian Professor Edward Ayers will speak at the
Naval Academy's 32nd annual Bancroft Lecture Monday, Oct. 3. He
will speak on "The
Logic of Southern Secession."
The event is free of charge and open to the public.
The Bancroft Lecture series was established by the academy's
history department to honor the founder of the academy, George
Bancroft. Held in early October each year, the Bancroft Lecture
series celebrates the anniversary of Bancroft's birth (Oct. 3,
1800) and the anniversary of the founding of the academy (Oct.
10, 1845).

Mid gets six months in brig
10/2/2011:
A midshipmen convicted of raping a classmate in her Bancroft Hall dorm
room was sentenced Thursday to six months in the brig.
Midshipman 3rd Class Patrick Edmond found guilty Wednesday of
raping and sexually assaulting a classmate, as well as lying to
investigators. As part of his sentence, Edmond will be dismissed
from naval service, including the academy, where he was still
living and attending classes until his conviction this week.

USNA Alumni invite to Navy-Notre Dame game tailgate
10/3/2011:
WISNAPA members, family and friends are invited to the USNA Alumni
Association's, along with Tom Teach (USNA '68), Navy-Notre Dame
tailgate on Saturday, Oct. 29 in South Bend, Indiana.
Festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. until one hour after the game. A
variety of food and drinks will be offered.

Mids broaden cultural knowledge, experience

For Naval Academy Midshipmen, a new school year brings opportunities to
immerse themselves in a plethora of cultural venues both within
the United States and abroad. The Center for Middle East and
Islamic Studies is a division that works together with other
academic departments at the academy to support students and
faculty in studying and conduction research around the world.

Midshipmen awarded for heroism at NAPS
10/5/2011:
A Naval Academy midshipmen was recently awarded the Navy and Marine Corps
Achievement Medal for his actions in saving a midshipman
candidate at the Naval Academy Preparatory School while
attending summer training in Newport, Rhode Island. Midshipman
1st Class Cody Cartwright gave CPR to a NAPS student who was
suffering from a reaction to medication.

Naval Academy motivates students to pursue sciences

The Naval Academy is expanding its Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math (STEM) outreach this year with two new programs designed to
develop enthusiasm for the sciences in elementary, middle and
high school students. The academy will host "Expanding
your Horizons," a one-day conference for middle school-aged girls Oct. 15.

Craftmaster program prepares mids for surface warfare

Officer candidates who choose to become surface warfare officers (SWO)
face an intimidating task of getting fully qualified and
proficient at various watch stations when they get to their
first ship. However, U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen have a unique
program that can reduce their learning curve and help them
navigate past their peers.

Twenty-one days to 'Arabian
Nights'
10/8/2011: The Naval Academy theater
group the Masqueraders will perform Mary Zimmerman's Arabian
Nights Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-6 at 8 p.m. in the Mahan Hall
theater. The play is adapted from the classical collection of
stories of the same name. Zimmerman, a theatre director and
playwright, often transforms epic pieces of literature into
dramatic performance based on a core group of actors, said the
production's director Christy Stanlake, a professor in the
academy's English department.

Mullen offers 40-year perspective on social, military issues

Naval Academy training craft runs on biofuel
10/10/2011:
The Naval
Academy's
Waterfront Readiness Department refueled yard patrol (YP) craft
692 with a biofuel blend, demonstrating the
academy's commitment to the Navy’s energy goals. The fuel is a 50/50 blend of
petroleum and a renewable algae-based biofuel, HRD-76.

Armed Forces Bowl signs USNA for 2016
10/13/2011:
Navy will play in the 2016 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl Forth Worth,
Texas, if the academy is bowl eligible. To be bowl eligible, a
college team must win at least six regular season games. The
Navy previously announced it would play in the game in 2013 as
well.

Academy sponsor program builds bonds between mids,
residents
10/14/2011: It took awhile for Deb
Hall to get used to the mess. The Severna Park resident likes
everything in place. But she had to let it go after she and her
husband began sponsoring midshipmen. Suddenly, the couple were
besieged with air mattresses and bags of clothing every weekend.
The Halls are among hundreds of families who have spent this
fall getting to know midshipmen as part of the naval Academy's
Sponsor Program. Sponsors become surrogates of a sort for
academy students far away from creature comforts.

Annapolis celebrates Navy's 236th birthday

The mayor of Annapolis proclaimed a day of celebration for the city Oct.
13 in recognition of the Navy's birthday and the long
partnership between the city and the U.S. Naval Academy which
has stood in Annapolis since 1845.

Mids honored for building houses
10/16/2011:
The City of Annapolis and the non-profit Habitat for Humanity paid tribute
to the contribution of midshipmen volunteers during a dedication
ceremony Oct. 3. The midshipmen were recognized for their
efforts building houses for residents in need.

Graduate program accelerates midshipmen's
careers
10/19/2011:
While most universities in the country have options for
follow-on graduate programs, they are often costly and
unassociated with a specific career goal. UNSA's Voluntary
Graduate Education Program (VGEP) provides an opportunity for 20
midshipmen in the top 10 percent of the graduating class get an
accelerated master's degree before they get to the fleet. After
graduating with a bachelor's of science degree in four years,
select midshipmen in the VGEP program will receive their
master's
degree in just seven months. The program provides $11,000 for
in-state tuition.

USNA hosts seminar on Islamic law
10/20/2011:
The U.S. Naval Academy Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies hosted a
one-day seminar on Islamic law Oct. 11 for midshipmen, faculty
and staff in Alumni Hall. The seminar featured presentations by
six leading experts on Islamic law, sometimes referred to as
the "Shariah," and was designed to instruct midshipmen
on the basics of Islamic jurisprudence and its role in modern
society.

Naval Academy preparing officers for cyberwarfare
10/21/2011: With an increasingly
networked military fending off attacks on its computer systems
on a daily basis, the Naval Academy is rapidly expanding its
cybersecurity offerings - part of a larger effort to bolster the
service's digital defenses. The Center for Cyber Security
Studies, which developed the introductory course and is working
on an advanced class to be taught to all third-year midshipmen,
also has established internships at the National Security Agency
and the National Defense University, incorporated cybersecurity
into the academy's professional development program, and is
considering a major in the field.

Mids hail visiting World War II veterans
10/22/2011:
A group of U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen were among the crowd greeting 73
World War II veterans at the Baltimore-Washington International
Airport Oct. 15-16 with rousing cheers as they departed the
terminal. The veterans were visiting the
nation's
capital as part of the Honor Flight program, a national program
which provides free transportation to war veterans across the
country to see their respective memorials in D.C.

Jeffrey R. Immelt, chairman and CEO of General Electric and member of the

growth, job creation and leadership in a global economy Oct. 19
in Annapolis.

U.S. Naval Academy program SHAPEs future leaders
10/27/2011:
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Roughead stated earlier this year to the
Senate Armed Services Committee that sexual assault is
incompatible with Navy core values and that prevention and
education continues to be a priority Navy-wide. It continues to
be a high priority at the Naval Academy, where the Sexual
Harassment and Assault Prevention and Education (SHAPE) program
provides prevention education to the 4,500-member Brigade of
Midshipmen.

USS Philippine Sea visits Georgia
10/28/2011: Guided-missile cruiser USS
Philippine Sea (CG 58) pulled into Batumi, Georgia, Oct.
17, and was welcomed by traditional Georgian dancers, local
media and military and civilian leaders. While in port, the crew
participated in basic boat maintenance, electronics, damage
control evolutions and boarding operations. Philippine Sea
is on a regularly scheduled deployment in the Black Sea and
serves to promote peace and security in the U.S. 6th Fleet area
of responsibility.

USNA named 4th nationally for graduating student-athletes
10/30/2011:
For the seventh year in a row, the U.S. Naval Academy is one of
the top schools in the country for graduation NCAA
student-athletes. Navy graduated 100 percent of its
student-athletes in six of the 20 NCAA sports reported on and
averaged 96 percent for student-athletes in all sports.
Navy's
overall graduation success rate of 96 percent was tied for fourth among
all schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision and was the best
among the three service academies. The national average for NCAA
Division 1 student-athletes is 80 percent.
