Students soar into naval future
11/1/2009:
Before they embrace the roar of a jet engine or helicopter, 150
Naval Academy midshipmen had a chance this summer to get a feel
for the controls in the whisper of engineless flight. The US
Naval
Academy's
Summer Training Soaring Program began this year as a way to
introduce interested midshipmen at the school of flying before
they commit to a naval career path.

Honor has bumpy
history at Naval Academy
11/6/2009:
Midshipmen are persons of integrity. They
stand for that which is right. They tell the truth and ensure
that the full truth is known. They do not lie. They embrace
fairness in all actions. They ensure that work submitted as
their own is their own, and that assistance received from any
other source is authorized properly documented. They do not
cheat. They respect the property of others and ensure that
others are able to benefit from the use of their own property.
They do not steal.
Since its amendment in 2005, the Navy Academy Concept - based on
the statements above - has filled a 95-page book that explains
what honor is and how honor violations are to be handled. Other
service academies rely on honor codes, but the Naval Academy
sets a higher standard. A code, according to Naval Academy
officials, is a list of prohibited activities; a concept that
sets higher goals and aspirations.

Veterans
Day

11/11/09: November 11, or what has
come to be known as Veterans Day, was originally set as a U.S.
legal holiday to honor Armistice Day - the end of World War I.
In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the
Korean War, the word "Armistice" was replaced with "Veterans,"
and November 11 became the day to honor American veterans for
all wars. Thank a veteran for service to the country.

Sources: USNA subbed mids to look more diverse
11/15/2009:
Naval Academy leaders removed two midshipmen from a color guard that
performed at the World Series last week because they were white
men, and replaced them with a non-white man and a white woman so
the academy could present a more "diverse"
profile, according to several sources, a move that has
reportedly angered mids and alumni. As it turned out, the color
guard still ended up all white because the male replacement
forgot parts of his uniform.

As the
nation's military academies try to recruit more minorities, they
aren't getting much help from members of
Congress from big-city districts with large numbers of blacks,
Hispanics and Asians. From New York to Chicago to Los Angeles,
lawmakers from heavily minority areas rank at or near the bottom
in the number of students they have nominated for appointment to
West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Air Force Academy,
according to an Associated
Press review of records form the past five years.
